Taking care in the Sun

and the best ways to get rid of a sunburn but now that Summer is here and I really do get concerned about the people that read my suntanning articles.

I worry that people will get sunburned, I know that people can easily get skin cancer from overexposure to the sun but also I remember how hard I tried in my late teens and twenties to get the best suntan possible with the skin type that I have.

Careful in the sunGetting a Great Suntan

I have written before about the best way to suntan These sun worshipers bake themselves carefully and with proper apparent care.

They are careful to turn and twist their bodies in a way best calculated to get an even, rich suntan over as much of their skin as possible.

They slather themselves with the latest lotion that promises to keep out harmful sun-ray effects and most importantly guarantees a deep tan.

“Ah, it feels so good,” they say. And I, with a trace of the sun worshiper still in me, agree.

  • The warmth feels like a balm.
  • Vitamin D is brought to the body by the sunlight’s effect on the skin.
  • The pimples of acne can diminish or disappear when the sun’s ultraviolet rays play upon them.

Any teen-ager who winces with pain of sunburn when clapped on the back can testify that the extra time in the sun is never good. For everyone there is an amount and degree of sun beyond which danger lies.

Even a person who tans readily and easily may get harmful changes in his skin if he has too much exposure.

Every year doctors’ offices receive a crop of acutely sunburned patients. Many people have ultrasensitive skins and should not keep trying to tan, because the blisters and the peeling and the pain will happen every time.

sunburn preventionA few individuals must try to avoid any exposure to the sun’s rays. Albinos need the protection of long-sleeved and trousered clothes, plus wide-brimmed hats, whenever they venture out into the sunshine.

Such uncommon illnesses as hydroa estivale and lupus erythematous make people particularly sensitive to the sun’s rays. In these conditions sunshine can act as a poison to the body.

A few individuals are even allergic to sunshine and get bad reactions from any exposure to it.

Prevention Of Sun Burn

Falling asleep in the sunshine is a dangerous thing to do. Even if the sun is behind a cloud, enough of its rays can filter through to cause a severe burn. Whether one is asleep or awake, his skin reaction is never so severe during the exposure as it will be hours and days later. Caution and moderation can prevent hours of pain and misery.

Tanning lotions are of some help in preventing painful burns but they should not be relied on completely. If common sense isn’t used on the beach or the tennis court, sun oil or cream will not save the day.

Mild burns from the sun are relieved by vaseline, olive oil, cold cream, or other soothing ointments.

If the skin is quite painful, cool compresses or baths of oatmeal solution or baking-soda solution (a teaspoon to a cup of water) may bring relief.

If blisters form, they should not be punctured. Infection may result. If the blisters break spontaneously, sterile gauze bandage should be applied.

If the burn affects the deeper layers of skin to cause blistering, a physician should be consulted. A doctor’s advice should be sought if the burn is severe enough to cause chills, fever, or general signs of illness.

Belief In Your Fitness Goals

I find through emails and website comments that people can be armed with all of the information but still not make real and lasting change in their health and fitness.

We all know that diet and exercise are the only secrets that are really needed but even with this information and a plan most people will not stick to a plan. The reason?

People don’t believe that they can make real change.

Over the years and with all of the bad decisions we will always seem to dwell on the problems that we have caused ourselves and the problems that others have caused and we never seem to think deep down that we can change.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and I believe that failure in our fitness goals really comes down to the following three factors.

1. We don’t dwell on our successes
2. We don’t trust our knowledge
3. We look at our results today instead of looking a little farther out.

Dwelling On Success

celebrationTo dwell on our success what we need to do is see where in our life we have succeeded in the past. We all have done great things whether we notice or not.

If you look at what makes you up and what you think about on a daily basis some scientists say that 95% or more of our thoughts everyday are the same as the day before. You can shake this up and start your day by having thoughts about your past successes.

Who cares about dwelling on the past and what use it is I can tell you if you keep remembering the successes that you have then when you are looking at your diet and workouts it will be easier to see what you should be doing and continue it.

Trust Your Knowledge Or Get Some More

I have always struggled with this at times and at other times I act like I should be acting. I will continue working at acting on my what I should but there is one thing that always holds us back, Quick Fixes.

The Quick fix, you have seen these everywhere in the past. The magic diet pill. The secret exercise that will build muscle, the late night infomercial promising easy fast money.

Quick fixes are all around us but the trouble is that they seldom work.

If you want to improve your diet or improve your fitness you can either look through all the info on this blog (How can you not learn from 2500 posts?) or you can just buy the info (I have reviewed lots of products that you can get pretty cheap).

Once you are comfortable that you have the knowledge to get fitter, stronger, and leaner then you have to give yourself the benefit of the doubt that you can do it and all other knowledge is just enhancing what you already know.

Look At Results In a Slightly Longer Timeline

When you are trying to get out of bed in the morning to workout, or putting in those last 5 minutes on the treadmill, or thinking of whether you should do that extra set of bench press or not you need to not dwell on what todays results are.

You really do improve your fitness with every meal and every workout but the great affect of these workouts and meals is found in your body a month from now with every meal and every workout building on each other.

Do the right actions today and tomorrow do the same and by building on each day you will be in a completely different place a month from now.

I have heard a quote many times that we drastically overestimate what we can do in a year but drastically underestimate what we can do in 5 years. It always seems that we have these amazing one year goals that are very unattainable when times are tough, then if we look back 5 years we can see the amazing changes we and others have made.

I know that there have probably been a multitude of books written on motivation and fitness and success but if you keep these three ideas in mind I hope that you, like me, will see the results and belief in your future.

Hypnosis For Weight Loss

Is hypnosis for weight loss an effective technique? Many people have successfully used hypnosis for many conditions, including weight loss.
Hypnosis is not anything mysterious or occult; it is really putting yourself in an extremely relaxed state so that your mind becomes suggestible to new patterns and ideas.

How To Get Started With Hypnosis

hypnosisHypnosis can be done yourself, with the help of a professional or even with an audio or video.

If you are thinking of going to someone who practices hypnosis, make sure you feel comfortable with them. If you don’t know them ahead of time, be sure to check their credentials and try to find testimonials regarding their ability.

It is simpler and less expensive to use self-hypnosis. You may want to get a tape, CD or video that puts you in a hypnotic state. You can find programs that are especially geared to specific issues like weight loss.

Some of these may contain subliminal messages -that is, messages you cannot consciously hear. Others simply have audible messages. They usually contain relaxing music and a countdown to put you in a relaxed and receptive state.

How hard to push when starting exercise

I always worry about how people get started or restarted doing exercise.

The trouble is that we are all excited to get started and run or workout and feel tired but the next day for a week wake up in excruciating pain and do not want to ever go through that again.

I know this because I have done that too.

bill at the gymI find that for the first week or two that you start or restart serious exercise it is best to ramp yourself up. We all want to be instantly fit but you have to  work up to it or you will never get there without giving up because of muscle soreness (Biggest Loser never shows this).

I was thinking about this yesterday in the gym and how it is nice to push as hard as I can to make gains knowing that I will be in fantastic shape in a month.

But also knowing that day to day for the first week I will be making gains mostly in building mental toughness and improving my agility, balance, and joint strength.

Don’t get me wrong, I am working hard but my workouts are to failure with fewer sets so I am still a bit sore but not enough to slow me down at all.

Excitement is great but overexertion will really hurt and if you pull something or get joint or back pain it can really set you back.

Remember To Push – But Not Too Hard Yet

So if you are starting out, or are sore today remember that the pain goes away and you should not be sore day to day after the initial bit of pain. Get through it or just work your way up.

If you do get sore there are a few things you can do to get rid of that muscle soreness.

A warm bath is always nice. You can use a  heating pad alternating with ice on your muscles. Also I have taken aspirin in the past to just dull the pain, and finally stretching, stretch those muscles lots whether sore or not to get rid of the lactic acid buildup and to help your flexability.

Consistency is key.

make sure you are getting some kind of exercise everyday even light walking or biking and if you are doing workouts make sure you are giving a day in between. I try to get at least two to three hard cardio workouts a week and two to four workouts a week as well.

Here is an article I wrote on starting Weightlifting

And here is another on starting exercise itself

I want to dive into more detail but sometimes that more you know the more confusing these things can be. Just get out and get some exercise, ok?

How to Eat Better at Restaurants – Don’t Make Mistakes

So you are looking for how to lose weight at restaurants? You are probably bored with your home cooked meals, and would like to visit a restaurant for a change. On the other hand, your doctor has advised you not to eat restaurant foods as it can result in gain.

You simply don’t know which way to go, right?

In this article I will tell you how to enjoy restaurant foods while at the same time making sure that you don’t get any fatter.

Here is a rule of thumb for you: if a certain food tastes too good, it means it has been richly fried, and as such, not good for your health. Surprisingly enough, the raw vegetables and fruits, which usually taste awful, are the best foods for quick loss.

How to Eat Better at Restaurants

1. Visit vegetarian restaurants: In order to be on the safe side, visit restaurants which offer only vegetarian meals. This is not to say that non-veg meals are bad.

With non-veg restaurants, you have to take extra care to make sure that you are not eating high-calorie or high-fat foods.

As an example, ordinary chicken meat which is served in most restaurants is usually laden with huge amounts of fat which is bad for you. Lean chicken meat, on the other hand, is good for you, but not all restaurants offer lean chicken meat as part of their menus. With vegetarian restaurants, you will be more often than not on the safe side.

how to Lose Weight at Restaurants

How to eat better at Restaurants

2. Let the salad dressing go: You have heard it a zillion times that salads are good for quick loss. The reason behind this is that salads are nothing but raw vegetables in chopped form.

Raw vegetables, as you might be aware, help you burn fat by boosting your metabolic rate. However, the salad dressing that is provided in most restaurants is rich in calories.

So whenever you ask for salads, make sure to instruct them to remove the salad dressing from the top.

3. Stay away from buffets: A lot of the foods you see at buffets are rich in calorie content. These foods are cooked in bulk with a large amount of oil, thereby making them unsuitable for those of us trying to be careful with calories and eat healthier.

If you really want to eat from buffets, make sure you steer clear of these fatty foods and choose the salads and other healthier alternatives instead. That way, you won’t accumulate an excessive amount of fat in your body.

4. Control your portions: Check the amount of food you are going to eat before you take that bite. If you think that the food provided to you exceed the portion control limit you are allowed, eat according to your portion limit and then carry the leftovers back home to be eaten on the next day.

Ask for a box from the restaurant to help you carry the leftovers and don’t feel at all bad about not eating the whole meal. Most restaurant meals are way to big anyway

As long as you use your discretion, there is nothing wrong with eating at a restaurant once in while. So go ahead now that you know  how to lose weight at restaurants and appease your tastebuds.

The Types of Anxiety

Feeling anxious from time to time is a natural part of our lives. However, feeling anxious constantly or letting that anxiety get in the way of living a normal life is not natural. If you feel you may have more anxiety or your anxiety is more intense than is proper, you may have an anxiety disorder.

Is your level of anxiety appropriate for each situation? If you see a man walking your way with a gun, your level of anxiety should appropriately be high. On the other hand, if you’re feeling incredibly anxious about driving two miles to the mall, your anxiety is probably out of proportion.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

anxietyConstantly worrying about everything. It can keep you up at night, make you chronically tired, and cause nausea. Your levels of anxiety are higher than the average person’s and you invent and worry about situations that will most likely never happen to you or your loved ones.

Example: Worrying that your daughter will get in a bike accident when she rides to school, worrying that you will be in a car accident as you drive to the grocery store, playing out the funeral scene in your mind should your husband die unexpectedly tomorrow.

Social Anxiety

This is beyond shyness; it’s a high level of anxiety about being out in public or in a group situation. It’s an excessive fear about social places and situations, and it can be incapacitating. You may have low self-esteem or worry too much about what others think of you.

You may practice avoidance rather than deal with the anxiety.

Example: Severe anxiousness when attending a church service or intense fear of going to a crowded movie.

Panic Disorder

Anticipated or random attacks of panic brought on by excessive adrenaline and incorrectly assessing a situation with intense anxiety. You spend a lot of time worrying you will have another panic attack and go to great lengths to avoid situations that might bring on an attack.

Example: Having a panic attack with symptoms of not being able to breathe, racing heart, and clamminess while on an airplane.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive thoughts and anxieties that are tempered by performing rituals. These rituals are done over and over again the same way each time or great anxiety is the result.

Example: Unlocking and locking your car door 6 times before you can leave it, or washing your hands with 3 squirts of soap and washing the back of the hands 4 times each.

PTSD

Varying anxiety symptoms as a result of a traumatic event. You have very real feelings of anxiety that a similar event will happen again.

Example: The traumatic event of rape can lead to fear of men, flashbacks, not being able to sleep alone, and the new occurrence of panic attacks, etc.

Phobia

Phobias are persistent, irrational fears and are associated with anxiety. If you are presented with the object of your fears, you immediately experience high levels of anxiety.

Example: Fear of airplanes or fear of snakes.

Having some anxiety in our lives is a normal occurrence, but when it is out of proportion to the event or seems to be taking over, then it could be that you are suffering from one of the above anxiety disorders.

How I will get healthy – 10 Tips To Improve Fitness

My family does not own a scale so I only get to weigh myself when I either go to my parent’s house or when I go to the receiving office at my work.

The last time that I weighed myself was back in the middle of December and I was still sitting at 200 pounds, my lowest in a few years.

Yesterday I had a chance to weigh myself using another quality scale at my work and found that my had ballooned over the Spring to 206 pounds.20 weight loss tips

 My Recent Weight Gain

This recent gain may not seem like a big deal but as I have mentioned earlier on this blog I had it easy over the summer riding my bike to and from work and now I am at a little bit of a loss with driving instead so I am going to have to start riding the exercise bike and getting back to the lifting that I gave back a little while ago.

So now I have to make some changes. Many of you probably know my wife is very health conscious in the kitchen and I follow the ideals closely but not the diet.

I have made a list of the changes I am instituting now for the winter so that I can lose that holiday but more importantly I can gain some muscle and bring back my metabolism. Here are the changes:

1. I am going to reread Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. As I have said in my review this is a great book and it always reminds me of what I am doing wrong.

2. Get back to increasing my water intake. In the winter there is much less water in the air and air conditioning becomes much more a way of life. Also I know how much better I feel when I am drinking lots of water throughout the day and not just in the morning.

3. Weight lifting in the morning. I like the Body for life system of working out in the morning doing half my body one day then cardio on the second day, the other half of my body and on the third and the fourth day cardio and then repeat. The system calls for six days of exercise in a row and then the seventh day off.

So there is a little overlap week to week to mix things up. I can do weights in the morning but will have to do the cardio at night on cardio days as my bike and elliptical trainer share a room with our bed and my wife probably does not want to get up when I do just to watch me workout, then again maybe she does?

4. Start eating six times a day again. At the moment I am eating a bagel with natural peanut butter in the morning and would like to replace this again with my all bran and milk for breakfast to start with. I will post soon about what would be a good six meals but right now I am probably only getting in about four.

bread5. Cut out refined foods. To me refined foods include things like bread and crackers and other empty calorie type foods. Since I will be pushing my muscles harder I will need all the nutrients I can get and don’t really need any empty carbs.

6. Cut out sugar and pop. These are my two real weaknesses. I have not gone a day without pop and chocolate in at least a few years and not only are these another empty carbs but also these two ‘foods’ are a killer for keeping my blood sugar at an even keel throughout the day which I have had a little trouble with.

7. Stretching twice a day. I always feel better when I am stretching and it always helps to heal sore muscles when doing a lot of hard and heavy lifting. My stretching really only takes about ten minutes a time so it is pretty easy to put this back into my schedule

8. Get my energy and attitude up. When I have a strong, positive attitude I just exude energy and this, although never really proven, I feel really raises my metabolism. When my metabolic rate is higher I burn more calories at rest, have more powerful exercise sessions and have better concentration and mental abilities. This is always a good thing

9. Increase my intake of protein and drop my carbs. This means that I will be getting more of my carbs from fruits and vegetables and replacing my starches with more protein instead.

I could never do an Atkins type diet as I feel there is a real danger to your body to really drop your carbs to zero, but it is also important to get enough protein to recover from hard cardio and lifting workouts. My extra protein of choice? Canned tuna rinsed to get rid of some of the sodium. I am a big fan of canned tuna especially when I mix it with diced cheese and pickles.

10. Sleep in more. In the fall I was sleeping quite well but now again I have fallen back into my bad habit of just getting six or seven hours of sleep a night. I know I personally need eight and that is what I will try to average again.

None of these changes are earth shattering at all but as we all know it is the consistency of the changes in the right direction that makes you healthier.

Quick Workout For Women Working Core Balance and Thighs

Whenever I go into the gym it seems there are two kinds of people, women on treadmills and men lifting weights

I hate to group the sexes this way but it is mostly true. Men are always looking to gain huge muscle while women are looking to “tone” their bodies. Well I think it is time for a bit of a role reversal in most gyms. I myself am bad for this but cardio has become a lot more important to me lately

Women Getting Fit – How and Why?

Today, women are into staying healthy and physically fit and this is evident by the number of women we see who devote some of their time going to the gym and other fitness centers. This change is the result of the strong influence of the media.

Women see those actresses and models show off their nice flat belly and strive to have that kind of body too. And that is where the problem starts.

Women start to ask around how they can lose weight, get rid of those love handles, chubby thighs and finally have that flat belly. They start searching online to find workout plans and other loss strategies that will help them with this dilemma.

Weight Lifting Workouts and Women

Luckily, after years and years of fitness training and studies, fitness experts have come up with workout plans that will suit the needs of women specifically.

Although women are very different from men, physically and emotionally, the things that they have to consider when it comes to working out are not far from men. Men require having a proper diet while working out, so do women.

Men need a good workout plan that can provide the required results, same is required in workouts for women. The only big difference women have when it comes to working out is the intensity of the workout plans that each group follows.

I said that because while most men seem to have the interest and motivation required to do heavy training such as the popular heavy weightlifting exercises, most women just don’t have that kind of interest. I said most, not all, as there are women that are much stronger and have more internal weight lifting motivation than your average man.

Quick Workout, Just A Few Minutes Per Day

The following are some exercises to include in your workout or you can just do these alone. Before you begin though, make sure you hydrate.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will not only help you get toxins out of your body faster and help lose more fat but also will help you prevent bad breath by keeping your mouth moist.

This is convenient because as you work out you tend to breath hard through the mouth and if there are people around you, it could turn into a social problem for you 🙂

Lets get started.

1. The Ab Crunches.

The ab crunches are not some kind of snacks. It is in fact a form of exercise that is done by bending the knee, with your hand at the back of your head (or cross them in front of you if you prefer).

Not touching your head with your hand, so you don’t pull your head awkwardly, slowly lifting your head and shoulders up and leaning forward until your shoulder are off the ground for a few inches.

And then, slowly lowering yourself back down, but not letting your head touch the ground. Repeat the process as many times as you can but usually you can work up to 3 sets of about 30 reps.

This exercise targets your abdominal muscles, legs, and strengthens your core. Although it will strengthen your core it will not “burn fat” as that is the work of your diet and cardio exercises more than ab crunches.

2. Work the Quadriceps with Lunges.

To work your quadriceps lunges work great. Try doing these by just kind of walking in a straight line and as you get better you need a dumbbell.

This type of exercise can be performed by holding a dumbbell in the right and left hands next to the shoulder, with the arm bent.

Stepping forward with your right leg, lower your body until your right knee is bent close to 90 degrees and your left knee almost touching the ground. Then push yourself back to the starting position.

Repeat the steps from the beginning, but this time, use your left hand to hold the and your left leg to step forward. This kind of exercise benefits your hips and abs, help improve your body balance and really burns your.

A Few Things to Remember

These exercises are ideal for every workout plan for women. Fitness experts believed these to be the most essential exercises that can produce fast results in the minimum amount be done alternately by every woman to get a stronger core and to work muscles that are not usually worked hard in your day to day activities.

And the good thing about them is that they can be performed in the comfort of your home. But you should know that these great exercises won’t be effective without a proper diet.  Thus your workout plan and a proper diet should always work together.

Advantages of Using Weight Training Machines

Proper nutrition is not the only way to keep the body healthy. Regular exercise and strength training at least twice a week should be done if we want to keep our body in top condition.

Weight training can be done with free weights and machines. While many people consider free weights as being for professional bodybuilders, training machines can be used by everyone for a similar purpose. Weight training machines are ideal for beginners and rehabilitation patients as well as serious bodybuilders.

When you step into a gym for the first time, you may be overwhelmed by all the complicated exercise machines around you.

incline-machineWeight training machines are designed to exercise specific muscle groups. For example, you can workout your chest, back and shoulders with a lat pull-down machine or chest-press machine.

For lower body workouts you could use a leg-press or leg extension machine. A fitness expert can show you how to use a training machine for your workout.

Serious bodybuilders say there’s nothing better than freeweights when it comes to strength training. However, training machines offer many advantages and benefits too.

Places You in The Correct Position

While free weights allow freedom of movement, a training machine automatically places you in the correct biomechanical position to accomplish the exercise motion in the proper form.

The machine effectively isolates the muscles that you are using, and all you have to do is push or pull the weight.

Your movement is restricted because you can only move the in one direction.

Safe To Use

Weight training machines are typically safer to exercise with compared to free weights.

The limited range of motion prevents you from using your muscles incorrectly. Weight training machines also eliminate accidents such as dropping a barbell that you are trying to lift.

A training machine is ideal for those who have an injury and are undergoing physical rehabilitation through strength training.

An exercise machine is also useful if you are working with heavyweights and do not have a spotter.

Faster Workouts

In general, it takes less time to complete your exercise when working out with a training machine rather than free weights.

When working with free weights, you have to remove or add plates on a barbell.

On a training machine, you can quickly adjust the by moving a pin or clipping cables to the desired resistance setting.

This allows you to go through your exercise routine faster while maintaining an elevated heart rate.

Old School New Body Review

Old School New Body is a unique, almost miraculous system based on science and an efficient, lost training method of a past legendary Hollywood trainer. The benefits are through the roof in terms of physical transformation, anti aging and hormonal balance.

With so many fitness programs out on the market and on the internet today, what makes this program any different than all the rest?

Who are Steve and Becky Holman?

Old school new body review

Old school new body review

Before we get to the program, let’s take a look at the experts behind this program. Steve Holman is editor and chief of Iron Man Magazine, John Rowley is an author, speaker and contributor to much of the media including Fox News, SmartMoney and Martha Stewart. Becky Holman is a wife, mother and contributor to Iron Man Magazine.

Steve and Becky Holman have been married for 27 years. Steve started training at 15 as a skinny 119-pounder and has been training ever since (more than 35 years).

Becky has been working out on and off for more than 20 years, but she lapsed in her 30s while raising her two daughters. In her 40s she became fed up with her over appearance and made a radical physical transformation in only a few months. She is now a regular contributor of nutrition- based items to IRON MAN magazine.

Steve has been IM’s Editor in Chief for more than 25 years. He has written more than 20 books on bodybuilding, training and nutrition and has also penned hundreds of articles on building muscle and burning fat. His blog, “Built for Life,” is at IronManMagazine.com.

Steve has also interviewed many legendary physique stars, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cory Everson, Tom Platz and Lee Labrada. His bodybuilding e-books are available at X-Rep.com and X-traordinaryWorkouts.com

What is the Old School New Body System About?

So let’s not beat around the bush; just what is the F4 system? It’s a method of training based on one that has been lost and collecting dust. The reason it’s been “lost” is because of the emphasis on intensity, which most trainees equate to heavy, joint-jolting workouts.

Go to any gym, and you’ll see that most people are either using very lightweights and resting too long or pounding their bodies with heavy weights, eventually getting injured. Contrary to popular belief, heavy bone- crushing poundage’s are not necessary for fast results. In fact, they can be detrimental. Those current heavy-training trends can overstress your body, jar your joints and actually damage your immune system because of excess stress hormone release (cortisol).

You do need to expend effort, but it should be cumulative. What does that mean? Here’s how it works.

The F4 system calls for moderate poundages for less joint stress and relies on high muscle fatigue for intensity—which means short rests between sets and growth hormone release. Growth Hormone triggers a veritable muscle-building, fat-burning (and anti-aging) cascade. That hormone decreases significantly as you get older, but this type of training can provide a real resurgence.

In short you can get in the best shape of your life, turn back the clock on aging all while strengthening your muscle, ligaments and joints. This fly’s in the face of modern exercise programs, which is good because people are not getting the results they are after. With Old School New Body they will get results. Period!

Are Pop Tarts good for you?

I have bugged my wife for a long time that my kids have never had a pop tart. As you could imagine morning TV is full of commercials for food and sugary food at that, so what about these Pop Tarts?

Yesterday we got a box of pop tarts for the kids as they finally won over my wife. Growing up I never had pop tarts myself but I am sure it is only because my parents cared about me. in my 20s I had a few so I of course know what they are.

So here is the scoop. Are Pop Tarts good for you? Are Pop Tarts part of a balanced breakfast?

No

Nutritional Analysis of Pop Tarts

The stats are really against these frosted toasted pastry deserts disguised as breakfast food. The box has numbers for one but realistically I think no one is going to have one. I will use the numbers for one anyway.

  • Calories: 200
  • Fat: 5 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 35 grams
  • Fiber: 1 gram
  • Protein: 3 grams

So what are we looking for here? Well the numbers look fine although in a vacuum it looks like a decent number of calories and there is a bit of protein.

But looking deeper look at what a Pop Tart gets it’s calories from – sugar- these things are made of sugar and fried pastry (don’t know how the fat is even that low) and the pastry is just one of those refined carbs that we always try to avoid.

The real problem though is that the kids get a big pop to their blood sugar and then a sugar crash and the calories are completely empty. Breakfast is an important meal for kids to get lots of nutrients and there are not going to be any, I know the box says there is some iron and folate but really no vitamins A or C at all.

So I will have to give a pass on Pop Tarts. Pop Tarts are not good for you even if they do taste great.

5 Simple Ways For Busy Moms To Start and Keep a Healthy Lifestyle

One of the biggest obstacles you are going to face when trying to create a healthy lifestyle change is your own mindset. Don’t think of your new goal to eat healthier and exercise regularly as a diet, think of it as a lifestyle you’d like to live.

A lifestyle change is lifelong. Helping you get healthier so that you can be more active with your children. Fad diets might work while you are actively working on that specific diet. Maybe you’ll lose 10 pounds. What happens after the diet though? You gain back 20. That does not help your body or your self-esteem.

Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life

Remember that everyone has off days and don’t beat yourself up if you cheat one day. You are in this for the long haul. You did not start eating unhealthy and exercising sporadically overnight. The process to become healthy and exercise on a regular basis will not happen overnight either.

take care of your mindset

Take your new healthy lifestyle one day at a time. You don’t have to do everything at once and trying to might get overwhelming. Then you binge eat or ignore the goal completely.

Change one small thing today and then keep it up for a week. You can add a new healthy habit daily, weekly, or once you’ve accomplished your first one.

A quick habit to begin is to start parking in the back of the parking lot when shopping or doing errands. The walk only takes a few minutes extra, but if you’ve got a few stops your step count for the day will go up.

Even 5 minutes of yoga, stretching or walking in the morning will get you moving in the right direction. Get up a few minutes before the kids and stretch. Do what feels right for yourself and your body.

Now that we have exercise taken care of what about healthy eating? The easiest habit is drinking more water.

Again start small. Try drinking 20 ounces of water every day. If that isn’t enough or you’ve done that for a week try 30 or 40 ounces. Keep increasing until you are drinking at least 60 ounces a day.

Making small commitments and keeping with them every single day might not seem like you are doing a lot, but you are getting into the habit of being more mindful of your health through eating and exercising. One small habit today turns into a bigger habit tomorrow. By the end of the year your five minutes a day has turned into 30 minutes 4 or 5 times a week.

Experiment in the Kitchen

Be a little brave and experiment in the kitchen with healthy recipes and different spices or ingredients. You will find new ones your family will love. There are ways to make delicious and healthy food. Just because you are changing your eating habits does not mean you have to give up on flavorful food.

food-vegetables-wood-knife

Don’t go crazy and get rid of all of your families comfort food in one day – they might not appreciate that. Instead gradually change your go to recipes for ones that are healthier.

To get more flavor use more spices and herbs. Spices change an entire recipe and how it will taste. Try new recipes that call for spices that you don’t usually use or have a stronger flavor than others.

Whenever possible use fresh herbs instead of in the jar. Fresh has more flavor.

Herbs and spices to consider using more of are cumin, curry, bay leaf, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, chili, cilantro, ginger, oregano, parsley and thyme.

Cut back on the amount of salt you use.

Most processed food has tons of sodium in packaging. Canned soup and pre-made meals have more sodium than what is usually recommended for a person in each serving. Be careful and look at the labels.

Another way to make your food healthier is to sneak in more vegetables. How? Whenever you are cooking add cut up vegetables to the recipe.

A food processor makes the job easier, but you can also dice the veggies really small. Only add a few vegetables to start. You can do this with some sauces, soups and casseroles.

Substitute fatty meats for leaner ones. Instead of buying the ground beef that is 75/25 buy the extra lean at 93/7 or better yet go to a local butcher shop and buy their ground beef.

Extra lean is more expensive, so watch for grocery store sales. Use half ground beef and half ground pork, chicken or turkey. These ground meats have less fat, so find a combo that your family enjoys.

Pork and chicken are better for you and have less fat than beef. Pick more recipes with these two ingredients during the month. Plus if you make recipes like shredded pork you can make several different dinners after you’ve cooked one pork roast.

Healthy recipes are everywhere keep an eye out when you are flipping through magazines, newspapers or cookbooks. Be more aware when you are looking at online – check out recipes sites or blogs dedicated to cooking healthy.

Sometimes you can find wonderful recipes on cooking shows or during the local morning show. The local shows are a nice resource because they will show you what vegetables are seasonal.

When your first switch from the way you eat currently to a healthier option it can seem overwhelming. Not sure where to start the process, what to buy or even how to get your family on board. The truth is it’s easier than you think.

The key is to slowly introduce new items. Use the tips below to help you from becoming overwhelmed. It doesn’t have to be a battle with your family.

4 Tips to Prepare Your Kitchen

1. Slowly Replace Your Side Dish Options

Instead of using white rice use a grain that has more fiber. This will fill everyone up quicker and make them more satisfied after they eat. Some options could be brown rice, quiona, barley or spelt.

Some of these alternatives to white rice will have different textures and tastes, so only use a portion in the recipe to begin with.

healthy snacks

2. Make Snacks Healthy and Easy To Grab

Prepare snack bags of healthy choices instead of ones that are full of fat and have no nutritional value. Carrots and grapes fit easily into the snack Ziploc bags and store for long periods of time without being in the fridge.

Pack nuts such as almonds, pistachios and walnuts instead of chips. These are easy to throw in a purse, backpack or lunch bag.

3. Make Freezer Meals Ahead of Time

Making freezer meals does not have to be time consuming. Pick recipes that are easy to make and quick. Or another option would be to make an extra casserole or cut up more vegetables while you are preparing your nightly meal. Put it in the freezer.

Find recipes that are healthy or substitute ingredients to make it healthier for you. This will eliminate grabbing a pizza or take out on the way home.

4. Use Flax Seed or Chia Seeds in Meals

One major tip for you to immediately start implementing is to use flax seed or chia seeds in your meals. How? Put a small amount in casseroles or ground meat.

These seeds are small and can easily be added to meals without being noticed. They need to be refrigerated, so put a sticky note by the stove to remind yourself to add them while cooking.

By changing a few ways that you cook can make a huge difference to your health. There is no need to get overwhelmed by all the changes you think you should make. Small changes, slowly work just as well as eliminating everything at once. Plus you won’t get tons of attitude from the family. That is a win, win situation for you.

How to Create an Exercise Plan and Stick With It

Wanting to exercise and become more healthy is the easy part. Finding time to exercise regularly and creating an exercise plan can be the downfall to many busy moms.

exercise-ball-exercises

Step #1 – Start Small

When you first start an exercise routine one of the hardest challenges is to just get started.

Thinking about everything you should have to make your exercise a reality – new shoes, a new workout outfit, a membership to a gym, exercise equipment – has you going from excitement to overwhelm pretty quickly.

So, how do you get motivated? You start with something so small that it takes no time and you can do it easily.

Small exercises could be 25 jumping jacks (or even 10) twice a day, walking for 5 minutes or stretching in the morning for 10 minutes.

Will these exercises get you to lose weight by themselves, probably not.

But when you are starting a new plan they will help motivate you to get started and create the habit of exercising regularly. You don’t have to lace up those running shoes and finish a marathon today, just lace them up and get moving!

Step #2 – Make it Fun

Moving your body and creating a habit doesn’t necessarily have to be about going to the gym. Especially if you don’t like the gym.

Find an exercise that interests you. Do you like to dance? Then take 5 minutes every day to groove to the music. Turn it up loud and get your kids involved.

They will absolutely love your exercise breaks and will start to look forward to them.

Love the outdoors and want to go hiking? Then go. Start with the parks around your house and go for a nature walk. Talk about the flowers, trees and animals and it won’t even feel like exercise.

The purpose is to find something you enjoy doing and stick with it. Exercise doesn’t have to be the same activities all the time. Dance one day and go for a walk the next.

Step #3 – Change Your Mindset

What does you mindset have to do with getting fit? Everything. Tony Robbins says to use words that get you motivated to do your goals. Instead of saying or thinking, “Oh I have to exercise today” change that one word to get. So your thought will, “I get to exercise today.”

Exchanging those two words will make a world of difference. No one likes to do tasks they have to do, but they look forward to things they get to do.

Make exercise a priority and commit to exercise regularly. Schedule it on your calendar and pick an exercise you’ll enjoy. Start small and develop the habits and you’ll be on your way to a healthier you.

Know Your Why

Discovering your purpose to getting to your goal should be your number one priority. By doing this one step your success rate goes up tremendously and you’ll stick with it long after others fail because you know why you are doing it.

Don’t skip this step because it gets hard or you can’t figure out your why. You’ll find it – just keep trying until you do.

By figuring out your why you’ll be getting fit and healthy for the right reasons. Like many other things people do, if they try to do it for someone else chances are it’s not going to work.

You need to find your reasons. Unless you are committed you’ll find excuses to not eat healthy and only exercise every once in a while. So, don’t let others convince you to do it or pick the reason you’re doing it.

You’ll need to dig deep inside to discover your why. When you get to an answer – you need to ask yourself why again. Don’t settle for a surface answer. You’ll eventually get to the heart of your true why.

Here is an example of how to get to your why. You want to get healthier for your family. Why? This statement is very broad and doesn’t motivate you to actually get it done.

Why do you want to get healthier?

I want to be able to spend quality time with them. Being an active part in their life instead of watching from the sidelines. Perhaps you aren’t able to go for hikes with your family because you get winded every time you try.

This is closer to your why, but it still needs work.

So ask why again? Why is being active important? Your kids are 8 and 10 and you don’t have very much time with them, so you want to be able to do activities with them that are meaningful and they will remember when they are out of the house.

Why is this important?

Because you feel you are a failure as a mom and are not helping them live the life they deserve because you are not able to keep up with them. Or maybe you are embarrassed to take them to physical activities, so you don’t. This is impacting their self-esteem and social engagement with their peers.

Now this would be your why.

Being a parent is an important job and if you think you are failing at it because of an action you are not taking – getting up earlier or making a commitment of five minutes daily to exercise is a lot easier to do.

Finding your passion will help you through the tough time and will motivate you to do what needs to be done. Some days this can be a struggle and you just won’t feel like doing anything.

While this might be okay once or twice, being able to get past this attitude and do what is required needs your true why. Take a few minutes and write yours down now.

How To Choose A Perfect Fitness Tracker For Yourself

When buying a fitness tracker, or any product for that matter, it is important to identify what works best for you not just in terms of functionality but personal style as well. The market is flooded with many fitness tracking gadgets that differ in pricing and model among many other things. What are some of the things to consider when buying a lifestyle tracker so that you get maximum value for money?

Extra Functionality

Yes, a product that offers extra benefits is definitely a great buy.

There are fitness trackers that have incorporated the latest technology to improve their ability to collect and present data.

The newer brands of trackers have some additional capabilities like having built-in heartbeat rate monitors, a lot of sensors and also smartphone notifications.

They are sort of hybrids between smartwatches and fitness trackers. You should also take note of the software of accompanying application, battery life and the ability to synchronize data with your phone or the web.

Design of The Fitness Tracker

fitbit-surgeSince these gadgets are wearable, choose one that compliments your personal style.

  • What’s your favorite color?
  • Are you looking for a small screen or a large one?

These trackers come in different designs and for you to have some personal attachment to them it is necessary that you choose something that suits your personal style.

It’s similar to having a favorite car, clothe or even toy.

The more you feel that it is a reflection of you the more you get attached to it. Trackers can also act as great fashion pieces and if you are a fashion forward person, you can use them to make a fashion statement.

Durability – Built To Last?

Of course you don’t expect to buy something that will break down or get damaged within a very short time after purchase so it is necessary that you go for quality.

Buying a fitness tracker that is durable will ensure that you enjoy its benefits for a long time and truly get good value for money.

You can determine the durability of your tracker by checking the quality of material used to manufacture it. Some fitness tracking devices are also waterproof which makes them suitable for those who enjoy swimming or water sports.

Your Age, Weight And Height

Because fitness trackers use algorithms to process data and relay information, choosing a gadget that matches your physical and biological features is one way of ensuring that you get accurate results.

Buy a fitness tracker that is meant for somebody of your age, weight and height since that improves the accuracy of the data gathered and statistics presented.

Warranty – 30 days?, 6 months?, A Year?

Products, more especially tech-gadgets, can malfunction at will even without your intervention.

Buying a fitness tracking device that has a warranty ensures that you don’t suffer any losses in case it stops working within a year from the time of purchase.

It’s a way of safeguarding your investment so that you get value for money.

These are some of the important factors that can help you purchase the best fitness tracker that will serve its purpose and motivate you towards achieving your fitness goals.

What Kicks Motivation Into High Gear?

What gets you motivated to workout, or to eat well? I know that sometimes this is a struggle for me and if I create a habit that makes exercise a part of my day automatically then it will happen.

Today is a very snowy day in Calgary (how many times has that come up on this blog?) and I know that my normal daily schedule tomorrow is going to get thrown off. I like to get on my bike and ride to work but there is no way that I can ride in a foot of snow and will take the bus instead.

Eating is the same way. I have a plan in the morning of exactly what goes into my lunch bag and I know right now that I will be having oatmeal for breakfast, bringing an apple and orange for snacks as well as a coke and chocolate bar and I will be having chicken left over from tonights dinner

Here are some tips to get that motivation that you need if you are struggling.

Plan Ahead Instead Of Motivating Yourself

planningJust as I wrote earlier it is a good idea to plan you evercise and meals ahead of time. If you know that you are going kickboxing every Tuesday night and every morning you are going to get up and ride an exercise bike while watching the news then you will do it.

If you just decide to take things as they come then everything else in life will get in the way.

Make A List Of Your Favorite Kinds Of Exercise

Make a list of all the types of exercise that you like to do. Just because running is good for you is not any good if you do not like running. A list of things that you like to do or want to try will give you a chance to try new things and have a list of what kind of exercise that you will do during the week.

Not only is this a good way to get those new things into your schedule but you will also be a lot more excited when you get to the point of exercising for the day instead of it looking like drugery.

Plan Your Exercise In Short Bursts

We have all seen those lists that work well. Try to park a few blocks from work everyday. Take stairs instead of the elevator. Go for a walk at lunch.

These ways of working out are not easy to start. On Monday morning you make a decision to do these things and then you just do them. On Tuesday you can just dovetail what you did Monday into making Tuesday the same way.

After the first week of doing this you will look forward to that quiet time on your walks, weeling your muscles as you go up the stairs and getting away from the computer at lunch.

The habits that you have in your life now were motivations once as well and if you want to change them then just getting these few things right will just naturally change you lifestyle.

I hate the idea of motivating yourself to do exercise because you mind so often just does not want to agree and then you feel guilty for not doing what you need to do. It is just so much better not to have to motivate yourself with big plans when these little changes will make you much more healthy without much pain.

Barriers to Self Esteem

I don’t know about you but everywhere I look there are barriers to self esteem. If you are interested in self development but have low self esteem, the first thing you need to do is fix that. Until you do, it is much harder to accurately assess what you need to learn and change in order to achieve your goals. In fact, if you have low self esteem it can be difficult to even see what your goals are.

Imagine yourself as a dart board. Everything and everyone else around you has the potential to become a damaging dart pin, at one point or another. These dart pins will destroy your self esteem and pull you down in ways you may not even be conscious of. It’s important not to let them destroy you, or get the best of you. So what are the dart pins to avoid, and how can you keep them from hurting you?

Barriers to Self Esteem

Barriers to Self Esteem

Barriers to Self Esteem

Negative Work Environment – Beware of “dog eat dog” theory where everyone else is fighting just to get ahead. This is where non-appreciative people usually thrive. No one will appreciate your contributions even if you miss lunch and dinner, and stay up late. You may find you are working harder and harder for less and less return.

Stay out of this, it will ruin your self esteem. Find ways to manage your work within the normal working day at least 90% of the time. If you have to compete with others, compete on your own terms. Do not be drawn into power games or negative behavior that will make you feel badly about yourself.

Other People’s Behavior – Bulldozers, brown nosers, gossipmongers, whiners, backstabbers, snipers, the walking wounded, controllers, naggers, complainers, exploders, patronizers, sluffers … all these negative behaviors in others will damage your self esteem, as well as to your self development program. But remember, it is not the person that is the problem: it is their behavior.

Changing Environment – You can’t be a green bug on a brown field. Changes challenge our paradigms. They test our flexibility, adaptability and alter the way we think. Changes will make life difficult for a while and often cause stress, but when we look back we will see that change is often the catalyst or cause of self development. Try not to resist it.

Past Experience – It’s okay to cry and say “ouch!” when we experience pain. But don’t let pain transform itself into fear by constantly thinking of the bad things that have happened to you or others in the past. It’s easy to wreck a relationship by bringing with you the issues you had in your last relationship, and expecting your new partner to be like your previous one. Treat each failure and mistake as a lesson, and move on.

Negative World View – Look at what you’re looking at. Don’t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In building self esteem, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.

Determination Theory – The way you are and your behavioral traits is said to be a mixed end product of your inherited traits, your upbringing, and your current environment such as your friends, your work situation, the economy and even the climate of the country that you live in.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that your genetics or upbringing will determine how your life goes. You have your own identity. If your father is a failure, it doesn’t mean you have to be a failure too. Learn from other people’s experience, so you’ll never have to encounter the same mistakes.

In life, its hard to stay firm, especially when things and people around you seem to keep pulling you down. There are many barriers to self esteem that you can help yourself by protecting yourself from. However, building self esteem will eventually lead to self development if we start to become responsible for who we are, what we have and what we do.

When we develop self esteem, we take control of our mission, values and discipline. Self esteem brings about self improvement, true assessment, and determination. So how do you start putting up the building blocks of self esteem? Be positive. Be contented and happy. Be appreciative. Never miss an opportunity to compliment. A positive way of living will help you build self esteem and set you on the path to positive self development.

How to raise your testosterone level

There are a few reasons why you would want to raise your testosterone level. Having higher testosterone will increase sex drive and allow you to increase muscle size.

The real goal of steroids is to raise testosterone levels in your body but the trouble is that this is dangerous and stops your body from producing its own testosterone.

Here are some tips to raise your testosterone level

Drop Your Fat Level

If you are carrying a lot of fat then your testosterone level will be naturally low. Not always sure if this is the health of the less-fatness or the extra muscle you got getting rid of the fat but better safe than sorry.

raise your testosterone levelDon’t lose Weight too fast

When you put your body into starvation mode by dropping weight too quickly then your body will think that the problem is permanent and will stop you from storing testosterone.

Kind of like the opposite of the flight or fight response.

Get More Sex

I know that this will come as no surprise but having sex is one way that your body senses that it needs testosterone.

So think about any kind of an arousal response where your body has to perform and that very act or thought of an act will cause you body to raise your testosterone level.

Eat More Peanuts

Research has found that men who ate diets rich in monounsaturated fat — the kind found in peanuts — had the highest testosterone levels.

Try not to eat too much fat but remember that the fat in any kind of nuts will raise your testosterone level.

Do Compound Exercises

One of the tricks that bodybuilders have known for years is that they gain more muscle by doing compound exercises. Compound exercises are the ones that use more than one muscle group. Start thinking of only doing bench presses instead of doing flyes.

Do leg presses or squats instead of leg extensions. Doing squats especially employees a lot of muscle fibers which will raise your testosterone level.

Low Reps Per Set

Besides doing compound exercises try to make sure that you are doing less reps per set. It may seem like as much work to drop and do 12 reps but it really does exagerate your bodys response by doing a higher for 4 to 6 reps pers set.

A Finnish study found that this workload produced the greatest boosts in testosterone.

Three Sets Of Each Of Your Compound Exercises

And here is the last of the trifecta of exercises. Do three sets per exercise. More sets than this will tire your body and overtrain leading to lower testosterone levels and too few sets will stop your body from getting that testosterone response

Remember. Your muscles have to be pushed but at the same time you do not want to tire yourself too much or your body will become scared of famine and will slow your metabolism and testosterone levels, this is the first way that you will be overtraining and is critically bad for you.

Get Lots Of Rest Between Workouts

build muscleThe other side of the overtraining part is not resting enough after your workouts. Get lots of sleep and make sure that you are not pushing yourself with too much cardio.

Reduce Alcohol Intake

Alcohol is very very bad for testosterone levels. Anytime that you have a drink it will drop your testosterone and stop your from being able to have a healthy testosterone level.

I hate to be a party pooper but anytime that you drink alcohol you affect your testosterone level (and yes I do drink beer here and there so I am not trying to pull prohibition type crap on you)

Eat Lots Of Small Meals Every Day

There is one very good way to raise your testosterone level and again it is by making your body think there is abundance. Eat many small meals a day instead of three big meals a day.

These smaller meals will prove to your body that you are healthy and there are no dangers around.

Keep The Fat In Your Diet

Fat is an important part of the testosterone equation. When your fat intake drops too much it affects your bodys ability to heal as well as many of the other metabolic parts of your systems.

Make sure that you are more concerned with the quality of your food than the fat and keep your fat level at around 30% of total calories…this is actually 15 percent of the amount of food because as we all know fats have twice the calories of carbs or protein.

This will raise your testosterone level easily and for most people can be the easiest way to bigger and fatter so watch out!

Sleep Lots

This goes hand in hand with resting but even more so. Your body only produces testosterone while you are sleeping. This is one of those sleep rhythm things that it is better to know about then it is to know the details of.

Now that you know how to raise your testosterone level put all of these together and you will be stronger, fitter, aqnd apparnetly even better in bad with all the practice trying to raise your testosterone level.
