Why do the Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers diets work?

As someone that follows the ebb and flow of diets I get a chance to see a lot of diets as well as the reports as to whether they work or not.

Over the last few years there have been probably 100 diets released on an unsuspecting public, some gain traction and others don’t but the big diets over the last few years have been Atkins, The Zone Diet, LA Weight Loss, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. Most of the diets have not been successful for the vast number of people but two diets have stood out, sort of.

Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers have been the most successful diets over the last few years mostly because of the marketing that they do. Weight Watchers has the Duchess of York and Jenny Craig has had Kirstie Alley and now Valerie Bertenelli as spokespeople. Everyone loves to follow famous people and these famous people have lost so why not listen to the success and follow it.

Actually both Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig have been successful as diets the diets are balances with three meals and a couple of snacks and not extreme for high protein or low fat. Mostly Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are middle of the road type diets that work for most anyone.

The sad thing about these successful diets are the lack of losses that people have seen on them. The average person will lose 10 to 15 pounds in a year on either Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig but the bulk of the lost on any organized diet is the fact that there is some kind of accountability in both of these diets.

In fact accountability seems to be the most important factor in any diet. I have seen how some people will not be successful at all with a diet and as soon as they start writing out the factors that make a diet work well for them they realize that it is the answering to themselves about what they are doing right or wrong.

In Weight Watchers there are meetings, and a food journal where you track your food and exercise. In the Jenny Craig diet there is forced portion control by eating prepackaged meals and also a calendar that you check off what you eat and what you do. Nothing can beat this kind of accountability to yourself.

No matter what diet you are on whether it is Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Fat Loss for Idiots or Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle, it is important to track and to make sure that you are accountable for everything going into your mouth or any exercise that you do.

Using your Wii for fitness

Using your Wii for fitnessI know lots of people have talked in the last year about using a Wii for getting exercise but I sat on the sidelines, sad because I had no Nintendo Wii.

Well this has all changed now since I got a Nintendo Wii yesterday for the kids for Christmas. I am not sure if the Wii is really going to be a fitness machine but I am really excited about Christmas morning and trying this thing out.

I just ran across a site for a Wii workout called Wii Healthy. The site has a workout program that i will have to try and see how well it works.

Really the Wii looks like more fun than exercise but if you are moving then you are getting exercise right? Well I am sure we will soon se a bunch more Wii related “get in shape” type articles so it will again be fun to see since I can actually take part.

Now in response to everything that Nintendo has heard and seen about response to the Wii. Nintendo has come out with an actual fitness program called Wii Fit. The idea behind Wii Fit is that you get a board around 18 inches or so wide and do certain exercises on this and see yourself (or a reasonable facsimile of yourself) on the screen. You can also track your results as can everyone else in the family. I can imagine this whole idea scaling out where you can have fitness contests with other people online. Very exciting to be sure.

If you and your family are looking for a Wii and live in Canada I posted a few tips on my Tech Blog on how to get a Wii. If you are living in the US there are a few great articles here otherwise follow my other suggestion and just watch the stores and network with the managers of the games department at the WalMart and Target stores.

Gastric Bypass is the wrong answer

I set off a bit of an email flurry a couple of days ago when I suggested that Gastric Bypass surgery is bad and is the wrong way to lose so I thought that I would explain why I do not like the idea of losing using gastric bypass surgery.

Gastric Bypass for those that are not aware of the idea is a surgery that either puts a band around a part of your stomach or staples your stomach so that it is smaller. This smaller stomach of course can hold less food so most people are going to lose a lot of very quickly and because of this Gastric Bypass surgery has become very popular.

OK so it is relatively easy to shed pounds with Gastric Bypass surgery how could I then be against it as a way to lose ?

The truth is that Gastric Bypass surgery does not make you fit or healthy. The day after your gastric bypass you will have the same issues with food that you had the day before but now you will now be able to eat as much food. Also any emotional issues will not be solved with yourweight loss. Most of these issues cause you to overeat although most people that are over think that that is the cause of their emotional problems.

Another more important problem is the nutrition that we all need from our food. If you starve yourself like is going to happen then you will have no way of getting the nutrients that you need and have to rely on supplementation to get everything that you need to live a healthy life. Now that I have broached this subject, how about the health aspect of this kind of loss? Being thin does not make you healthy as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, in fact being thin can lull you into the false expectation that you are healthy. If you are getting lots of exercise then you need more calories to feed your muscles and after a gastric bypass you are not going to be able to get what you need actually get healthy.

Lastly there is no guarantee with Gastric Bypass. Once you are at the point of needing gastric bypass you can either die on the operating table or die after during recovery as your body is not strong enough for the surgery. Also there is a way that if you do overeat after your gastric bypass surgery that you may be able to stretch your stomach and now you will be in the same place that your were before.

So what can you do instead of Gastric Bypass?

Gastric Bypass used to be the only way that people that are morbidly obese could think of to lose but now that we are in the fourth season of the Biggest Loser anyone can see that there is another option. Sure it may be very difficult and take a long time to lose through diet and exercise but people that are really over can lose 100 pounds in a year and over this time you can become healthier, happier, build incredible self worth and overcome all of those food demons as well.

If you have been thinking about gastric bypass surgery I certainly hope that this has given you pause to reconsider. There is an alternative.

4 things to do today to lose weight

Everyone likes to have shortcuts to losing weight. Although as we all know the important things really are to have a good diet and to get exercise.

Having said this though there are times that you can make a real difference quite easily. Some people make such incredibly poor decisions that they can turn things around pretty easily. So for these people here we go.

1. Stop smoking – Smoking lowers the amount of oxygen that your body can get to your muscles. In fact if you quit smoking the amount of oxygen in your system will increase even within the first day. Some people smoke in the bizzare thought that by smoking you will eat less and although it is hard to eat with a smoke in your mouth, this will be counteracted by the fact that you will not have the energy to exercise and keep yourself healthy.

2. Don’t drink – Drinking alcohol will lower your metabolism and force your body to store more fat. I do not know the details of this but if you go about having a couple of beers every night then cutting these beers out will make a huge difference to how you feel, your outlook on life, and your chance to be motivated to workout in the evening.

3. Cut out Deep Fried Food – Deep fried food is the worst kind of food that you can eat in two ways. Deep frying radically increases the amount of fat in any food, and deep frying destroys any nutrients in the food before it gets to your mouth. Look for instance at a piece of chicken, A deep fried chicken breast has 28 grams of fat compared to only 8 grams of fat in a oven baked breaded chicken breast. Do the math, that chicken breast will go from 260 calories to almost double at 460 calories.

4. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables – Fruits and begetables on Weight Watchers and most other dits are almost free calories. The reason that ist is easy to eat lots of fruits and vegetables on any diet is again due to two things. The high water level in fruits and vegetables create more fullness for less calories and secondly fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, and many antioxidants that will help you get healthier in the long run. Eat lots of fruits an vegetables and you will surely not have room for all of those crappy foods that call you by name.

As I mentioned earlier you may already know these things and follow them. If this is the case then please email this article to someone that can use it. These are really easy tips and will make a monumental change to your health just by applying them.

Why didn’t I lose any weight?

Often things take a bit of time to take affect. Sometimes you do all the right things but see no results and change tactics, don’t do that ride it out instead.

When people start a new diet they get excited do all the right things and then in the first week they lose 5 pounds or so and are very excited with the results, then the next week comes and the only lose a pound or nothing at all and discouragement sets in.

What Are Yoyo Diets?

You hear a lot about yoyo dieting, gaining and losing only to gain it back again and often this will happen because people become discouraged and don’t let the changes that they are making to take affect and change to a different type of diet. Why didn't I lose any weight?

Although our bodies are complex and in many ways can change very very quickly, losing does not tend to be one of these things

If you eat all of the right foods and get the exercise that you need and then at the end of the week you have not lost any is it because the diet and exercise are not working?

probably not.

Often when you make big changes your body will start a bit of a backlash. You will retain water, your metabolism will slow down in fear of starvation or your body will just not have caught up with the changes.

You Need To Wait for Weight Loss Changes

Often the diet and exercise changes that you make will not show up for a couple or even three weeks. Many of the big diet companies know this. Jenny Craig only has you weigh in once a week as does Weight Watchers and Weight Watchers cautions people not to weigh themselves at all during the week.

As you have probably noticed beofre your will fluctuate all over the place during a single day so any changes that you see are very hard to predict from week to week even.

Stay on a course doing the right things and give yourself at least a few months to see if you are tending in the right direction.

Do not just take the scale into account but also look at how you feel, how your health is, how your energy is and how well you are sleeping. What you want out of any diet and exercise program is to improve all areas of your life, not just the bathroom scale

How to do crunches to strengthen your core

One thing that seems to confuse a lot of people is the fact that the media shows us slim people with great six pack abs. This would lead most people to believe that if you want to reduce your stomach then you should just do sit-ups and you will lose the stomach. Sadly this is called spot reduction and it is not really possible to lose a bot belly by just doing sit-ups.

What your really need to know is how to do crunches

So to lose your pot belly you really need to do more to lose your overall fat and this can be done using two changes to your body.

To do that, you need to burn more calories than you eat. Abdominal muscles are not large muscles, so working them isn’t going to burn many calories. Walking and jogging are better calorie-burning activities.

The muscles in your abdomen, pelvis, lower back and hips are part of what is known as the core – The area of the body where your center of gravity is located. Developing a strong solid core gives you increased balance, stability and controlled movement that will help you improve performance. You use core muscles when you reach up to get a glass off the top shelf, bend down to tie your shoes, or swing a golf club. Strong core muscles also improve posture and protect you against back injuries.

What are the best abdominal exercises? For the beginner, nothing seems to beat crunches.

How to do Crunches

1. Lie with your back on a padded floor.
2. Prop your feet against the wall or on a chair at a 90-degree angle to help you keep a neutral spine position in which your back is not too arched or too flat. As your abs get stronger, try putting your feet flat on the floor with your knees bent.
3. Cross your arms over your chest or hold them straight up.
4. Cough to engage your ab muscles.
5. Using these muscles, lift your upper body off the floor, raising yourself about 6 to 12 inches. Exhale as you go up. This will help maintain a space between your chin and chest.
6. Hold this position briefly.
7. Slowly lower yourself while inhaling. But don’t relax all the way down — keep your shoulders slightly off the floor.
8. Repeat until your ab muscles are fatigued. Stop immediately if you experience pain in your lower back.
9. Do this every other day, as you would any strengthening exercise.

As your abs strengthen, add more challenging exercises. You can increase resistance by holding a dumbbell across your chest. And, while most ab machines don’t offer benefits over the crunch, using a fitness ball can increase the challenge by putting you on an unstable surface.

The next step of course will be strengthening the other side. Your lower back

How to do crunches to strengthen your core Have you thought that maybe you have the whole picture wrong about how to get six pack abs? There is this fantastic diet and exercise system that will teach you everything you need to know about how to get a firm and trim midsection and that allows your ab muscles to show through.Check out The Truth About Six Pack Abs now.

Starving on Survivor

Starving on SurvivorI have recently stopped watching the TV show Survivor but I was definitly hooked on Survivor for years. I remember when I first started watching Survivor I used to say that I would be voted off in the first week, don’t know how true that is but anyway.

I have always enjoyed watching the people on Survivor do dumbe things and lose until the almost disappeared and then in a metamorphosis they would appear to get fat in front of our eyes during the last episode when the show gave away the million dollars.

So two questions, why do they lose so much and why do they gain it all back.

Well first of all everyone knows that if you do not eat enough food and still have to get exercise you will lose weight. Look what happens as the show goes on though, people get lazy, sluggish and make bad decisions. The real problem with the contensents on Survivor is that their metabolism slows, they start lacking in sleep and nutrients and finally near the end they seethe end in sight and just push a little while longer.

Once the on-island show is over the Survivors go home and quickly put their show lost back on. The 39 days was a out of body, out of mind experience and they did not learn anything, they just starved. Everyone gets back to their old diet whether they wanted or planned to or not and they gain that 30 or 40 pounds pretty quickly.

So I think the message of Survivor is clear if you want to lose and change your lifestyle Survivor probably is not it. This gets me back to how I could survive better on Survivor.

First bulk up and get in shape before the show. Try to go in with good cardio ability and be very strong but 30 – 40 pounds over, wou will lose it anyway.

Next, don’t be a leader, be very helpful to everyone individually so that they feel a kinship to you. As we have all seen the helpers go pretty far on Survivor and the leaders get knocked off pretty quickly. The flip part of this though is that if you need to make a decision in front of others never agaonize aboout it just make it quickly and live with the consequences, no one on survivor seems to like people that think about decisions.

Once you are in the third or fourth week solidify yourself with at least three other people although all independently and start to really “play the game”. Make sure that your partners are never in trouble at the same time and for sure cater to everyone the best you can.

Now this part I think is important, suring the second or third week I think that it is important to make a couple of pretty big mistakes. These mistakes can not be something that affects other people and never in a challenge but are things that you have to clean up yourself. This will make it seem like you are not competition and people will let you stay…cross anyone though and you will be out quickly.

Lastly, as you get close to the end of survivor go all out. Start to play really hard and never lose a challenge. All the rules seem to change in the last few episodes and at this point people are never really safe. You are only safe when you have won the challanges. When you are in front of the counsel at the end of theshow you can point out how you helped everyone, where never back stabbing and you still outwitted, outplayed and outlasted everyone else.

Then the next morning go on the morning show to get the million dollar check and sign your book deal.

Alli sells 2 million starter packs – But is it good news?

I have mentioned before that I am not a big fan of Alli and most of the trainers and experts that I have heard from do not advocate it’s use as the way to lose either. The “Wonder Drug” Alli that was released three months ago with lots of hype sold 2 million starter kits, the creators or Alli announced today.

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare announced today that it has sold more than 2 million alli(R) starter packs at retail, and that alli users are enthusiastically embracing alli and its proven track record of helping people lose gradually. This news comes as the company is breaking the first in a series of next-generation ads for the -loss product that depart from the typical “before and after” testimonials and offer an intimate and honest look at the healthy diet and lifestyle changes experienced by actual alli users.

Launched nationwide on June 15, alli is the only FDA-approved -loss product available to over adults without a prescription. The alli capsule works by blocking the absorption of about 25 percent of the fat in the foods people eat, helping them lose 50 percent more than they would through diet and exercise alone. alli starter packs contain alli capsules in 60, 90 or 150 counts, plus user’s guides, dietary support materials, access to a free online support program and the alli “shuttle(TM)” carrying case.

In addition to its retail success, alli is garnering intense consumer interest and discussion. Approximately 5.4 million unique visitors have logged on to the alli websites, myalli.com and the Spanish-language mialli.com. In addition, more than 200,000 people have enrolled in alli’s online behavioral support program. Consumers have also posted more than 125,000 messages on the official alli message boards, and tens of thousands are talking about alli on blogs and online discussion groups they have formed themselves.

As we all know, losing can be difficult and when there is as much advertizing and promotion as Glaxo Smith Kline did for a product like Alli. Although this looks like a lot of product to be shipped I am not sure that it is really a good decision. There are many other places around this blog that you can get info on losing but really losing comes down to making changes to yourself.

You need to make changes like healthier eating, getting some or more exercise and being very aware of the way and how often that you eat.

Often, and I can not really remember any of the Alli commercials, a loss product commercial will just show you skinny people playing and laughing and looking really hot. The images are great but they of course make Alli or products like them look like wonder drugs when in actual fact there needs to be changes made that are more significant than JUST popping pills.

Oh, and I just need to take one dig at Alli, I don’t expect the commercials showed poo stained clothes from the fat leakage that the product seems to trigger

Boycott the Biggest Loser TV Show

I wrote this article in anger a few months ago during season 4 of the Biggest Loser after Neil, one of the contestants gamed the Biggest Loser by cheating and drinking a couple of gallons of water right before the in. I am now again watching the Biggest Loser. But in reading this post you can see the anger that i had about the cheating and I certainly hope that the people that run the Biggest Loser do not let it happen again.

————————————————————————–

Well after three almost four seasons of watching the Biggest Loser as well as blogging about it I have now decided to boycott the show for good.

Anyone that saw tonight’s episode of the Biggest Loser was a horrible farce and hurt most of the contestants and I expect most of the viewers.

So, what happened tonight on the Biggest Loser, horrible gamesmanship. One of the teams conspired against everyone else but in the end one of the players, Neil, cheated by retaining water and gaining 17 pounds and instead of getting kicked out of the game he actually got what he wanted and that was for someone on one of the other teams kicked out.

There are of course no rules against trying to gain on the Biggest Loser but going this far is a terrible way to try to play the game.

NBC has always tried to plug the Biggest Loser as a motivational show where people come together and support each other to try to lose and change their lives but then they have allowed this to happen.

I know that there is no way to change this as the show is taped ahead of time so the next few weeks have already been taped but with falling ratings you have to think that NBC has conspired with the people on the show to create a ridiculous controversy that does nothing but piss of the viewers that still support the show.

for most people it is hard to lose and losing 1 or 2 pounds is all that most people really expect. For this show to inspire people with 10 pound losses and then to allow one person to game the show with a 17 pound gain is absolutely terrible in my eyes

Boycott the Biggest Loser by not watching it anymore.

Starting to lift weights – Part 1

Now that fall is in full swing and the baseball playoffs are winding down most of our exercise is going to need to take place indoors instead of the outdoors that it is so easy to do in the summertime. There are of course two kinds of exercise, weights and cardio.

First I want to apologize in advance to any hardcore lifters here. Most of this stuff is a bit of a review for you.

Sometimes I think that everyone of course lifts weights on at least a weekly basis. Of course this is not fair as most people, although well meaning, have never lifted weights in their life and are not about to join a gym to start lifting weights this week.

The simple fact is that the more muscle that you have the more calories that you body will need to burn in order to maintain your . This fact alone should make any person looking to lose to start looking at the gyms that they drive by.

The simple fact is that if you have never lifted weights just think of this time between now and the beginning of the New Year as the best time to start warming up to the idea of lifting weights. If you start lifting some kinds of weights at home then you can get stronger, build muscle mass and when the new year comes with all of the gyms giving great deals to join you will have a better idea if you want to join a real gym or not.

First of all I think that it is easy enough to get some light weights that you can start lifting with at home. Either look in the classifieds in your local paper or go to the local pawn shop or used sporting goods place and get some 5, 10, and 15 pounds dumbbells, women can probably get away with 2.5, 3, and 5 pound weights to start with.

So what if you have no weights at home? First of all are all of the regular calisthenics that we all know. You can do things like push-ups for your chest, shoulders and triceps, lunges for your legs, and sit-ups for your abs.

If you would like to start doing weights proper then you have many options. Look around the kitchen and you probably have some heavy bottles or cans that you can do bicep curls with, you have kitchen chairs that you can do front laterals with. There are many options and if you look around I am sure that you can improvise with what you already have.

I will write another article this week about what kind of workouts to do exactly but this week why not just try to find a few kinds of exercises that you can do around the house if you have no weights and if you can beg, borrow, or steal some weights it will make things a lot easier

Lose with acupuncture

An Australian study on acupuncture has shown stunning results in the effect of acupuncture in suppressing apptetite and as we know many people have a problem with appetite and that causes them to fail on diets. Why not try to lose by suppressing your diet with acupuncture. Most people are scared to try acupuncture for anything because of course no one wants to be poked with needles. From everything that I have heard the needles used in acupuncture do not hurt at all and there is so much history and success with this method of health treatment that we should really be taking this more seriously.

Objective of acupuncture and appetite suppression study

Many over people are aware that diets can help with loss but have difficulty in suppressing their appetite. Acupuncture stimulates the auricular branch of the vagal nerve and raises serotonin levels, both of which have been shown to increase tone in the smooth muscle of the stomach, thus suppressing appetite. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation of specific auricular acupuncture points on appetite suppression.

Testing method for acupuncture and appetite suppression study

Sixty over subjects, randomly divided into an active and a control group, used the AcuSlim device twice daily for four weeks. The active group attached the AcuSlim to the acupuncture ear points shenmen and stomach, whereas the control group attached the device to their thumb where there are no acupuncture points. The goal of a 2 kg loss was set and changes in appetite and were reported after four weeks.

Results of acupuncture and appetite suppression study

Of those who responded, 95% of the active group noticed suppression of appetite, whereas none of the control group noticed such a change. None of the control group lost the required 2 kg, with only 4 subjects losing any at all. Both the number of subjects who lost and the mean loss were significantly higher in the active group (p < 0.05).

Conclusion of acupuncture and appetite suppression study

Frequent stimulation of specific auricular acupuncture points is an effective method of appetite suppression which leads to weight loss.

So there we have it. This seems to be a great study in showing that acupuncture is indeed a great way to help you perhaps lose weight. Why not book an appointment with the needles and find out if it will work for you.

Dancing to Lose Weight

Dancing to Lose WeightDancing with the Stars starts it’s new season tonight and if you have ever watched the show before you already know how hard these contestents work to get the moves right and the dances very fluid and professional looking. This season there are two stars whos names you know that have had trouble losing some lately.

Jenny Garth who you might remember from Beverly Hills 90210 and Marie Osmond from the Donnie and Marie show as well as other stuff are on this seson of Dancing with the stars and both said that the dancing has helped them lose weight.

Said Marie Osmond:

I would love to go the whole way just because I said to them, ˜Look, I’ve got to lose some so I figure it’s better for you guys to pay for it than me

and Jennie Garth said:

The baby from baby number three did not go away as quickly as the other two, so for me this is a great opportunity to get in good shape.

The show for entertainments sake all comes down to whether ytou like to watch dancing, my wife watches and I just catch a little bit if I am not on the computer or playing with the kids. The show does not give you tips like the Biggest Loser does but it will show that any exercise that is active and fun will help you lose weight. Any exercise that is not fun will not work as well becuase if it feels like a burden then you probably will not do it enough for it to do some good ir even do it at all.

How did Tori Spelling lose weight?

How did Tori Spelling lose weight?

Tori Spelling

Many of us remember Tori Spelling as the duaghter of Aaron Spelling and as one of the stars of Beverly Hills 90210. More recently Tori Spelling has had a couple of TV shows and got married and had a baby.

As with many people when they have babies Tori Spelling gained a little more than she expected during her pregnancy and the tabloids ran with it. This week there was a little bit of a coming out for Tori as she had photoshoots with her husband and new baby and interviews where she showed that she has lost all of her baby . The system she used? Nutrisystem.

We have seen lots of B rated celebrities over the last few years doing ads for different weight loss programs most notbly of course has been Kirstie Alley for Jenny Craig who is probably more famous now than she was when she was on Cheers, as well as many others.

Tori Spelling and Nutrisystem

Most interesting to me in the Tori Spelling story is what is Nutrisystem and what does the diet program stand for?

Nutrisystem is a diet that looks at the Glycemic Index of foods and tries to have you lose with the GI Diet type of eating. There is some research that shows that the GI Diet is not very effective although the jury is still out. I have more importantly seen that most diets will work anyway as long as you strictly adhere to them as most people will see a little bit of success and then will quit and go back their bad habits and lack of exercise.

So now that we have seen Nutrisystem pass Tori’s lips we have to wonder if there will soon be a Nutrisystem TV ad campaign starring the “Inn Love” “Nortorious” star.

First person Alli review

First person Alli review

Alli Review

Jessica Carreras recently wrote this Alli review article for the Michigan Journal about her results in using Alli , the new wonder diet pill that I have written about before. As we all really suspect from a fitness standpoint this pill is not going to help you lose if you are not taking care of yourself with a great diet and daily exercise.

Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Hydroxy Cut – and the newest loss miracle? Hello, Alli. This in fact a first person Alli review

Praised as a miraculous “fat blocker” that helps women to lose 50 percent more when on a diet, Alli has received lots of criticism lately because of allegations that it may cause, er, unpleasant side effects to the tune of fecal incontinence. Indeed, on the bottle, it warns potential users to begin using Alli on a day that you can be at home near a bathroom, just in case. Yikes. Anyway here is an Alli review from someone that used it for a week.

Alli Review Experiences

So here’s my confession, and I say that because I am somewhat ashamed: I tried it. What can I say? I was curious and my shorts haven’t fit so well this summer. Plus, my mom was footing the bill because she wanted to try it too. In my defense, it was her idea.

Shame aside, I’m here to quell the rumors and spill the beans about this miracle loss pill. No pun intended.

I have to admit, I was deathly afraid of Alli the first day I took it. My mom and I would call each other every couple of hours asking if the other had “experienced any side effects,” i.e. was either of us in need of a Depends and a change of clothes. To our pleasant surprise, neither had. In fact, neither of us felt any different at all, good or bad.

So I took my pills, three a day, and turned down the McDonalds and the cookies for fear that I would regret them later in more ways than one.

One Week on Alli

To keep the story short, it’s just over a week later and I told my mom she can keep her Alli to herself. The reason? Yesterday was our weigh in. Yep, you guessed it. No fecal incontinence, but no loss either. Even my mom, who I’ll admit has a much healthier diet and stronger resolve than I (midnight Taco Bell runs, anyone?), didn’t shed a pound. Okay, so it’s only been one week. But still.

I didn’t necessarily quit because it wasn’t working, although I’ll admit that I’m among the millions of women waiting for that miracle pill. I quit because it made me afraid to eat and, quite frankly, I love eating. When we entered into the Web site that we hadn’t lost any , it told us that obviously, we needed to eat even less fat. Smaller pants size be damned. I’m sick of salads.

The bottom line: It’s not worth the hefty price tag, or the fear. Really, though, most loss plans aren’t. If I really reach a point where I am determined to lose weight, I’m confident that I know how to on my own. I don’t need a book or a Web site or a bottle of pills to tell me that grilled chicken is a better choice than Pizza Hut, or that taking the stairs burns more calories than eating a doughnut while riding the elevator.

And I certainly don’t need a loss pill that makes me afraid to eat French fries but doesn’t help me lose any . Goodbye, Alli.

So what did you think about this Alli review? Have you tried Alli? If you have why not add your own Alli review in the comments of this post.

Men Lose Weight faster than women

I am paraphrasing this article from Health 24 that I thought many men would like and many women would be a little disgusted with on how men can lose faster than women.

The “Secrets of the Sexes” series on BBC recently featured a fascinating episode on “Brainsex”. Zooming in on the brains of men and women, they concentrated on how the sexes differ in terms of emotions, empathy, problem solving and spatial orientation.

It was evident that the brains of men and women differ considerably.

This set me thinking about the differences between men and women when it comes to basic metabolism and ability to lose weight. I started wondering whether men have an advantage over women in keeping those kilos in check.

Let’s have a look at some of the most important factors that determine body to see whether this is true, or not.

Resting energy expenditure
Resting energy expenditure (REE) is defined as the amount of energy required to support normal body functions and to maintain the energy balance of the body (homeostasis). REE supports body functions such as breathing, the circulation of the blood, energy used by the nervous system and keeping our body temperatures constant (Krause, 2000).

The most important factors that determine REE are body size and composition.

Generally speaking, men are bigger than women. This means that they would require more energy to maintain REE. In addition, men tend to have a higher percentage of lean muscle tissue than women, so the metabolic dice are loaded against women when it comes to REE.

Because of their bigger bodies and higher percentage of lean muscle mass, men will have a higher REE and thus be less likely to gain .

Body fat percentage
Women have a higher proportion of body fat than men. This is a genetic adaptation which ensures that the female body is cushioned to bear children. The higher body fat percentage in women lowers their metabolic rates by 5 to 10% compared to men (Krause, 2000).

Thus, women need less energy to sustain their normal metabolism and will be more inclined to gain if their food intake exceeds their energy requirement.

Average men and women have body fat percentages of 14% and 24% respectively. Elite male and female distance runners, with the same body mass or , have body fat percentages of 5% and 10% respectively (Noakes, 1991).

If even our top female athletes have double the amount of fat in their bodies than their male counterparts, then ordinary women will generally carry more fat than ordinary men. Consequently, females also have a lower percentage of lean body or muscle mass when compared to men.

Lower VO2 max
Another factor that can hamper loss in women is the fact that they tend to have a lower VO2 max. The VO2 max is a measure used in exercise physiology to describe the maximum amount of oxygen an athlete can take up to use for exercise.

The unfair advantage
It is evident that men have a number of unfair advantages over women when it comes to losing weight. Most couples have experienced this when both partners go on a slimming diet and do exercise to lose : the husband loses more at a faster rate than the wife.

So, the female of the species has to work so much harder and stick to her diet for so much longer and do so much more exercise to achieve the same results as her male counterpart. This seems unfair, but it is a fact and there is nothing we, as females, can actually do about this – except to persevere, of course.

Women do need to eat less for longer and exercise harder to lose the same amount of as their partners.

Saving grace
The saving grace that counts in favour of women is that the female sex is much more motivated to lose and, in most cases, less susceptible to temptations when it comes to cheating. Female dieters won’t as easily succumb to a night out with the boys, which entails consuming copious amounts of beer and fatty snacks.

This may not seem much of a compensation to most women who struggle to lose weight, but if we keep in mind that “the hand that rocks the cradle, controls the world”, then women can exercise iron control and achieve their goals of loss despite the unfair advantage that men enjoy.

Why Diets Can Never Work

Why Diets Can Never WorkAs the writer of a popular fitness blog I get emailed almost every day by people asking what diet to use, why their diet does not work, and especially why everyone seems to gain after they stop their diet. Well the simple answer is that diets just can’t ever work.

OK, to stem the risk of seeming a little crazy (I have in fact given positive review of a couple of diets) I will expand on the simplistic so that you can know why a diet will never work and what will work.

Diets can never work because they are only temporary. How many of us have been awed by the loss of a coworker that was on Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig or Atkins? Of course after the came back on we did not congratulate them on the return of their old habits but it was in fact the old habits that came back to roost.

The life of a diet

There is always a sense of excitement when someone starts a new diet. It is like any other lifestyle change in that when we begin a diet we like to look at our perfect selves in the future instead of the warts and all that we live with now. The first few weeks on the diet are full of small victories, a pant size here, 5 pounds there and eventually we not only take pride in our loss but actually identify ourselves with losing weight. The trouble is you can not sacrifice forever and eventually you have to stop losing and oh yeah maybe the people in the office are not really asking to much about the exciting new diet anymore.

Eventually the diet ends. We have either reached a goal , stopped sacrificing or just given up. Lets for example say that the ultimate happens. You hit your goal ! Well now all of the stars have aligned and you feel great about yourself, have pride and a feeling of accomplishment and eventually go to bed. What happens tomorrow.

I will tell you what happens tomorrow, far to often the old habits creep in. After the initial goal there is nothing left and you get tired of sacrificing. You eat a couple of candies ( you lost all that of course you deserve it). You start going out with the people from work in the evening, eat a bit of a bigger lunch and then before you know it you are up 5 pounds, then 10 and then you feel like a loser for not keeping things up but the habits are already headed in the wrong direction.

Enough of the crappy story.

I told you that I would tell you what will work and after all that I know you want to know it before you get to the all magical goal .

What can you do to make a diet work?

The fact is that a diet is not nearly enough, all a diet is to your body is a phase that will eventually end. What you really need is a lifestyle change. Eating better is good but just losing and feeling better is not enough. When the chocolate is calling you need a bigger and deeper reason to keep to the rules that you have. In fact what are your rules?

This is the first big part of successful lifelong loss, what do you feel is important? What is the role of food in your life? What are the rules that you have in the food arena? What are the foods that you just do not want to eat anymore? Remember that once you finish your loss all of those foods that you are denying yourself will expect to be back in your diet. You can not banish foods forever, but, you can just decide that these foods are no longer going to be important.

The next big part of your life will be your relationship to exercise. We all know that we need to exercise but if the diet is going well and we can avoid the exercise then many of us will skip it altogether. What you really need is a goal based exercise program. I can not think of anything worse than knowing that you have to exercise for 30 minutes a day for the rest of your life. A better way to do exercise is to make it a social event. Join a walking club, get a squash team together, join an online forum that talks about successes in exercise. If you are only looking at exercise as an important chore to losing then once you have lost the there will be no reason to continue and guess what, you won’t continue. So just like the food it will be important for you to make sure that the value of your exercise is internalized an important lifestyle choice so that after the day you reach your goal there will be no decision the exercise has just become a part of your life.

The time to act is now

No matter where you are at in the cycle of dieting, just starting, almost though, at your goal or, on the other side with your moving up, it is important for you to decide on the role and value of diet and exercise that will carry you for the rest of your life and not just until you hit your goal .

What kinds of diet pills are there?

There are many kinds of diet pills on the market, I will try to explain what the difference between them is and how you can better choose, if you do decide to choose what kind of diet pill is best for you

Diet and exercise are key

Before I start with the kinds of diet pills I have to admit that I am not a fan at all of diet pills in general because for most people it is much easier to lose by eating well and exercising. As we all know it can be a challenge to eat well or exercise but I am convinced that these are going to help 90% of the people out there. I will link to a diet and exercise hub as soon as I create one.

Three kinds of diet pills

What kinds of diet pills are there?

kinds of diet pills

There are three kinds of diet pills. The first diet pill is the kind that raises your metabolism; this is a kind of upper and will have an effect more like caffeine then anything. The next kind of diet pill is designed to stop you from getting hungry, this is an appetite suppressant. The third kind of diet pill is a much different, this kind of pill stops your body from metabolizing either fats or carbohydrates to try and make you not get penalized for what you eat. There is a fourth kind of diet pill, diuretics but these are not good at all for anyone’s diet as they get rid of water and as we all know water is essential to life. Do not take diuretics!

Metabolism raising diet pills

OK, first kind of pill raises your metabolism. This is an effective way to lose as the number of calories that you burn per hour at rest can make a big difference in how much you lose. Be prepared to be hungry though as your body will just naturally try to get you to eat more food to counteract this raised metabolism. The most common pills to do this either have ephedrine or ma huang or some kind of green tea.

Stopping hunger with diet pills

This one has been in the news a lot lately. Instead of worrying about the output of your body you control the input this way if you do not eat you should lose weight. The most popular diet pill on the market for suppressing your appetite is of course Hoodia. Hoodia seems to work but the problem is that if you go to Wal-Mart you will see lots of diet pills with Hoodia, the trouble is in the way all of these products have been created these is not much Hoodia in them at all and it is just mostly fillers.

Fat and carb blocking diet pills

The last kind of diet pill allows you to eat but what it does instead is not allow your body to metabolize either fats or carbs. I would lump these together as some diets say low carb and some diets say low fat. Your choice on what diet works best for you. These are kind of exciting as this is a whole new way to deal with loss and I would guess that you would quickly learn what you are doing wrong with your diet depending on which one of these works best for you.

There is a lot to learn about kinds of diet pills and whether they will work for you or not. My own advice is to go first with diet and exercise, these should work. If you still can not find a way to lose the continue with the good habits and then supplement with what you need. Is your metabolism slow? Do you binge eat sometimes? Does your body store the carbs or fat to easily? Good luck with your diet and loss goals.

New Chitosan facts

It takes a lot of disciple and commitment to lose or to maintain a trim body. These days a lot of people are making that important decision to lose and keep healthy. Fortunately, due to the advancement of science, there are now various pills and medications which can make the process of losing easy, quick and safe. Chitosan is one of these wonderful diet pills available.
Chitosan diet pills reduce fat, help raise good cholesterol and control appetite naturally. Basically, Chitosan is a fiber derived from shellfish, and it operates as a magnificent fat trapper.
Nowadays, many chitosan-based products are available on the market, and they all promise to block fat in order to benefit fromweight loss.

Chitosan, works to bind to some of the dietary fat that you eat and remove it from the body rather than allowing it to be absorbed. This way, you do not accumulate excess fat.

Based on some reviews and claims, Chitosan attaches to the intestinal lining where it tightly binds dietary fats and lipids prior to the absorption in the body. Consequently, the dietary fat is prevented from entering into the bloodstream because when the dietary fat is bound to the chitosan fiber, it becomes a large mass which cannot be absorbed in the body. This means that the fat is not absorbed into your body, thus preventing you from carrying excess .

In addition to chitosan, Supplementing with Vitamin C can aid Chitosan effectivity. Several published reports have shown that chitosan works in concert with Vitamin C. Additionally; Chitosan also contains an all-natural bean extract that generally inhibits alpha-amylase activity. This prevents the breakdown of dietary starches into glucose, which means that carb from starch passes through the system unchanged.

It is also claimed that Chitosan is a non-stimulant, all-natural nutritional ingredient derived from the white kidney bean. Chitosan is by far the first nutritional ingredient that has been clinically and scientifically proven to neutralize starch that is commonly found in your favorite foods like breads, pasta, rice, crackers, corn and potatoes. If we do not expend some energy by exercising, we accumulate fat from eating these carbs.

It is important to understand how Chitosan works. The advocates of Chitosan state that during the digestive process, your body converts carbs by breaking down the carbohydrate molecule with alpha-amylase, which is an enzyme produced in the pancreas. These calories are either burned off through exercise or stored as fat cells for future use. If one does not exercise to expend calories, this may lead to gain. Inactivity means that these stored fat cells accumulate. This is where Chitosan comes in. Chitosan then binds to some of the dietary fat that you eat and removes it from the body rather than allowing it to be absorbed. In addition, Lipase, a digestive enzyme is added to Chitosan in order to assist in emulsifying the fats that you consume, making it a better fat absorber.

Chitosan seems like a wonder pill has several other health benefits; namely, it increases fiber intake; avoids constipation and increases bone density. It is also said to help with healing wounds and ulcers. Chitosan also reduces the risk of heart disease and improves longevity.
