Conjugated linoleic acid and loss

I was heartened by this story that has been running for a couple of weeks but the University of Guelph did a very small study that found that Conjugated linoleic acid can help weight loss. I for one am hoping that we see more bigger studies to show us more about htis popular supplement as there are also some decent reports of the antioxidant properties of Conjugated linoleic acid.

The popular supplement CLA helped over adults burn fat, even through the holiday season, says a study by American and Canadian researchers.

The six-month study included 40 over people, mainly women, who were divided into two groups. One group took a daily supplement of CLA while the other group took a placebo, CBC News reported.

Over the course of the study, the people in the CLA group lost an average of 2.2 pounds of fat and tended to lose fat from the abdomen. This type of fat is believed to increase the risk of heart disease. In contrast, the participants in the placebo group gained an average of 1.5 pounds in November and December alone.

“Despite no differences between the CLA and placebo group with regards to calorie intake or physical activity throughout the study, the CLA group still managed to lose prior to the holiday season and didn’t gain any over the holidays,” said study author Andrea Buchholz, professor of applied nutrition at the University of Guelph in Canada.

The study was published in the International Journal of Obesity.

CLA is a form of naturally occurring polyunsaturated fat found in meat and dairy products. CLA supplements are available in health-food stores and pharmacies. While animal studies have suggested that CLA helps burn existing fat and impedes proliferation of new fat cells, previous research in humans has yielded inconsistent findings, CBC News reported.

Egg Safety from the FDA

I remember watching an old episode of Chips where Ponch cracked an egg into a glass and drank it. I have done this in the past as well in the misguided belief that it would make me stronger.

Raw eggs can be dangerous to eat and you should always cook your eggs before eating.

Egg Health tips From the FDA

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reminds consumers to pay special attention to the handling of eggs and preparation of foods that contain eggs during this holiday season.

Egg Safety from the FDASome holiday favorites, such as cookie dough, homemade eggnog, and some types of stuffing, may contain eggs that are raw or undercooked. Eggs sometimes contain a bacteria called Salmonella, which can cause illness if eggs are not handled and cooked properly. A

n FDA national survey of consumer food safety practices, the 2006 FDA/FSIS Food Safety Survey, found that cookie dough is one of the major sources of raw egg in the American diet, and that only three percent of respondents always use a food thermometer when they cook baked egg dishes such as stuffing.

To avoid egg-related illness from holiday foods:

  • Do not eat unbaked cookie dough.
  • Cook baked egg-containing dishes to 160 degrees F.
  • Make recipes that call for raw or undercooked eggs, like eggnog, with eggs that have been treated to destroy Salmonella or with pasteurized egg products.

An estimated 118,000 illnesses per year are caused by consumption of eggs contaminated with SE. To help consumers avoid these illnesses, FDA requires the following statement on packages of fresh eggs that have not been treated to destroy Salmonella:

Safe Handling Instructions: To prevent illness from bacteria, keep eggs refrigerated, cook eggs until yolks are firm, and cook foods containing eggs thoroughly.

Following these instructions is important for everyone, but especially for those most vulnerable to food borne illness—young children; the elderly; persons with weakened immune systems due to conditions such as AIDS, cancer or diabetes, or treatments such as chemotherapy for cancer; persons with weakened immune systems due to steroid use; and persons with immune suppression after organ transplantation.

So what about Eggnog? This is poured straight out of the carton at Christmas isn’t it? Well Eggnog that is sold in stores in North America is pasteurized. Using a pasteurized product means that no further cooking is necessary.

Evil Halloween Candy

Those little Halloween candies looking at you from the bowl, little, bright colored and just jumping up with the sweet chocolate that you know that you love so much are very very evil.

You know you want one, you yearn for one or two but as you try you just can not say no….or can you?

Halloween Candy Calories

Halloween candy is some of the worst stuff that you can eat.

  • It is small so you do not worry too much about the calories (even if you eat 20),
  • it is high in saturated fat,
  • and there is so much around at this time of year that it is hard to avoid.

In fact it would be hard to find an office building anywhere in america that does not have a few bowls of Halloween candy lying around on November 1st.

Here are the calories for some Halloween candies:

Note: Calorie content is based on 1 serving of Halloween snack or fun size packages, not full size servings found in the candy aisle.

If you are not worried about all of these extra calories over the next week that is fine, but if you would like to avoid Halloween candy and the calories that they offer here is a few tips.

1. Change the way that you think about the little Halloween candy.
Most of us will associate these candies with childhood and that carefree feeling, instead think of them as something that will raise your blood sugar and make you jumpy.

2. Eat properly so you can stay away from Halloween candy. If you keep yourself on track for eating then avoiding the Halloween candy is easier because you will not be hungry.

3. Only buy the Halloween candy that you do not like. What may be tough for someone to resist may not be too hard for you to resist.

4. Decide what you are willing to eat ahead of time. Look at the list above, there are some good decisions that you can make that will stop you from making this a gain holiday by eating the right Halloween candy. I am a big fan of Tootsie Rolls and those are apparently OK to eat.

5. Just stay away. there is some willpower involved in not eating the things that we are not supposed to eat. Have some willpower and you can stay away from treats, it is only a one week holiday anyway, right?

Paul Kriegler from Life Time’s Weight Loss Team gives a few easy steps you can do at work this Halloween season to avoid screaming at the scale:

Ditch the break room: Coworkers are infamous this time of year for bringing in treats to share during or even after the holiday (so they don’t eat them at home!).  Don’t fall for those temptations of freebies and instead, try to encourage more walking trips during your break times.  If you like to share, bring in some seasonal apples and heat up some almond butter with cinnamon for a nice dip.

halloweenProcrastinate: If you are planning to give out candy on Halloween night, don’t by that candy until the day or two before the event.

Rest assured, the grocery stores will have plenty leading up the day – you might even get it on sale – but it will also help you avoid eating or snacking on it yourself.

Trick or treat with your kids: Halloween creates the opportunity to get exercise and more steps in!

Make a goal of how many houses you’ll visit and make sure everyone is wearing comfortable, exercise shoes.  Halloween might actually be one of the few holidays that encourages movement.

Skip the fun-sized: Skip the fun-sized candy bars and choose individual servings of trail mix made with nuts, raisins or dried fruit, pretzels, and a sprinkling of chocolate pieces for a protein-packed snack will help you nix the munchies without leaving you feeling deprived

Check the ingredients: Life Time has just introduced a new app for your phone. The Healthy Pantry App helps spot artificial ingredients and common allergens in many packaged foods and beverages by simply scanning a food item’s barcode to see specific information about its ingredients.

It’s as easy as red, yellow and green! Practice scanning Halloween treats with your kids to help them identify healthier Halloween options.

Be a healthy party planner: Don’t use the excuse that Halloween gatherings take your focus off your Healthy Way of Eating. Take charge of your Halloween plans, and delegate who brings what dish.

Volunteer to steer the menu options toward more whole foods and fewer processed carbohydrates. Plan on bringing one of the main dishes to ensure everyone (including you!) has a healthy, filling food option.

If you don’t want the hassle of planning, bring your family to any Life Time location for Spooktacular- a healthy Halloween event. Kids of all ages will enjoy games and activities, a costume contest and more.

Don’t drag out the holidays…it’s a long season: Halloween is one day; have fun and indulge a bit, but get right back into habits the next meal or day.  Don’t justify an entire weekend of indulging only to be spooked by the scale or tight pants and low energy next week.

How To Jump Start A New Healthy Lifestyle

There are many tips, tricks and ideas that people have to help you live a healthy lifestyle. Not only are there a lot of ways but there are a lot of people telling you what to do to live a healthy lifestyle.

I expect that you know more than you give yourself credit for and besides listening to me, you should take these following ideas and leverage them with the knowledge you already have to live a lifestyle that will make you happy and healthy.

Firstly you should make sure that your eating is good. Next time you go to the supermarket buy a lot of food that is fresh.

When I say fresh I mean food that have not been processed and put in a bag or a box.

this months dietThis mean more fresh fruits and vegetables and eggs and less flour based foods like crackers, cookies, cakes and breads. I also try to get people to eat a bit more protein, you know like fish, meat and chicken but depending on how you eat now those ideas may be enough already.

Next make sure that you have enough water in your diet. Many of us drink a lot of coffee and soft drinks and as much as these taste good they are not that great for your body and your body really does crave water.

Again this is up to you to listen to what your body needs and if you are thirsty grab some water more often than you grab the other drinks.

Do you feel tired all of the time? Often people feel tired for one of two reasons. Either they do not sleep enough or they allow stress to enter their lives and never let it go.

Letting go of the stuff in your life is the easy part. Make sure you action things that you need to do when you are in the position to change things and otherwise just have a list in every place that you need to get things done so that you can take care of it at its own place.

The sleep part if it is an issue will take care of itself once you let go of the stress and go to bed, with no TV, at a reasonable hour.

Last is exercise. Oh, did you think I would forget about exercise? Make sure that you have your body moving for at least 30 minutes a day.

I actually went as far as to move close to my work so that I could ride a bike to and from work every day and this alone has freed up more time because I do not have to worry about exercise and at the same time I have an increase in energy, sleep better and am able to eat a little worse than I would be able to otherwise.

Exercise is something that you should figure out as far as the kind and the time of day that you will fit them in, what works for me will quite possibly not work for you and this is where most exercise plans FAIL.

Does this how to list seem tough? I hope not.

There are many ways that you can make changes in your life and these how to’s are just an example of a few things that when put together can make a big difference in your life

Best Tips To Lose Weight Found By Accident

Finding best tips to lose weight is not difficult. In fact there are so many tips, so much advice, that it can be hard to find a consistent way forward. One of the best tips I ever came across was something I found by accident, and it works a treat.

Best Tip Comes By Accident

First, remember that old fashioned advice comes in many forms and some of them are little gems, using smaller plates for example. How about eating more slowly? Plus of course there is the evergreen of watching how many calories you eat.

shoulder dumbell pressSure you have heard best tips to lose before but the reason they have stuck around for so long may be simply because they work. You can use any or all of them on a long term basis, and all of them allow you to keep on eating the same types of food you ate before.

Exercise is sure to be included in any great fitness list. The more exercise you do, the more calories you burn, but you need to be careful which type of exercise you do. If you build too much muscle without getting rid of the fat, the muscle may develop *under* the fat, which will not get you the body shape that you want.

There are two types of exercise that you can do and surprisingly maybe the best tip is to do weights hard so that you have lots of muscle to burn your calories. Also there is cardio, moving at any time is a great way to lose weight

In my case it was when I took up running, I found a plan which included a lot of walking, because it’s less jarring on the body.

Running may cause injury to joints that aren’t used to it, so in fact the simplest exercise can often be the best. Walking still burns a high amount of calories. So why not include it in your daily schedule?

Walking for Half and Hour

A simple half hour walk, at a pace which doesn’t leave you panting, may burn a couple of hundred calories, which is great. What I discovered though, was that it helps if you think of those calories in terms of actual food that you might be tempted to eat.

For example, I knew the walking was burning about 200 calories, and I also knew that a chocolate bar would add all those calories right back on, plus maybe a few more. It changed my mental outlook hugely, and of all the tips to lose , this one has stuck.

To develop the point, it meant that if I ate the chocolate bar, I knew I would have to do another half hour walk to ‘pay’ for it, or from another angle it was wasting a half hour walk I had already done.

It meant that I was now viewing the chocolate as something that spoilt my hard work, so I was less inclined to eat it. Yes, I still eat chocolate occasionally, and love it, but even now I view each bar as a big pile of calories that needs to be accounted for.

I found that concept by accident after taking action with short walks, just going to show that reading tips to lose is nothing like as effective as actually acting on them.

So remember if your are looking for the best tips to lose they maybe just the thoughts in your head.
