Two major forces in the health and fitness industry are banding
together in the hopes of getting people off the couch and on their feet
for the second annual Walk-It Challenge.
Weight Watchers and the
Running Room are hosting the 5K walk across Canada on June 12 in the
hopes it will help encourage Canadians to get active and make physical
activity a regular part of their lifestyle.
"We
hope all our members, their families and friends get out there and
walk, the easiest and least expensive thing you can do for your health"
she told me last week.
Registrants don’t have to be Weight Watcher
members, either, she told me. "It’s a free activity for anyone who
wants to join us. The goal is to get people motivated to move."
Akalin,
who has been with Weight Watchers since 2000, knows the ropes for sure.
She joined as a member back then, shed 50 pounds and went to work as a
team leader, quickly moving up the ranks to her current job.
"I
love the program, the four pillars of the Weight Watcher approach —
eating well, healthy habits, group support and activity — are the key
components to a healthy lifestyle," she said.
So far, there are 500 walkers registered with the overall goal of having 900 people walk across the province.
"We’re aiming for 10,000 walkers," she said. "That would be amazing."
People who would like to register can visit runningroom.com.
