But at the same time I just bottled my fourth batch of home made beer, Barons Beer actually, and thought that it would be fun to come up with a great big list of why beer is good for you.

Health Benefits of Beer For All Of Us

Cancer preventer – A compound found only in hops, which are used to make beer, have been discovered as benefits of beer to prevent cancer.

Of course we all know that hops are an ingredient in beer and therefore Xanthohumol has high hopes of making beer a new anti cancer drug.

Xanthohumol flavinoids have been tested and its use is hoped to be a preventative treatment against prostate and colon cancer and even may be a form of hormone therapy for women.

Getting your vitamins – A friend of mine used to say there is a pork chop in every glass of beer but recent studies show that there is vitamin B6 in beer increases the level of vitamin B6 in a beer drinkers blood which has been shown to decrease the level of homocysteine which increase the chances of heart disease.

Reducing chance of heart disease – another of the benefits of beer is that alcohol drinkers had higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, often called the “good” cholesterol, which is a protective form of blood fat.

The alcohol drinkers also had lower levels of fibrinogen, a protein that promotes blood clots, as well as elevated levels of other molecules (platelets) that prevent the clotting and stickiness of blood cells.

Reduction in Kidney stones – A Finnish-U.S. study of beer-drinking, middle-aged men was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 1999.

The report stated that an increase in beer consumption may reduce the risk of developing kidney stones. Results showed that there was a 40 percent lower risk of kidney stones in beer drinkers, but the researchers were stumped as to whether the benefits of beer results were due to water, alcohol or hops.

Defying the bad of X-Rays – Beer helps reduce chromosomal damage from radiation exposure thanks to beta-pseudouridine.

According to a study by the Japanese researchers from the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, and the Tokyo University of Science Blood samples were taken from test subjects before and after they had drunk about 630ml of beer.

Apparently, when the samples were exposed to X-rays and other types of radiation, after the subjects had drank the beer their samples showed at least 30% fewer aberrations in the blood cells.

Memory Booster – A Swedish team has shown that mice fed with moderate amounts of alcohol grew new nerve cells in the brain.

The full implications of the Karolinska Institute research – which appears in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology – are unclear on the benefits of beer, but Stefan Brene told the BBC:

“We believe that the increased production of new nerve cells during moderate alcohol consumption can be important for the development of alcohol addiction and other long-term effects of alcohol on the brain.”

Slow the Aging Process – In a study published in the March issue of International Immunopharmacology, scientists at Austria’s Innsbruck Medical University found that hops, a key ingredient in beer, affect the production of neopterin, a telltale sign of inflammation, and levels of the amino acid tryptophan (low levels are associated with more inflammation.)

Keeps you Awake – Although there is no caffeine in Beer, beer was found to reduce neopterin production and suppress degradation of tryptophan, according to a study. (Tryptophan is also commonly cited as the reason people feel tired after gorging on Thanksgiving turkey.)

This suppression might be connected with the calming effect of beer,” the researchers note, “since its normalizing effect on the tryptophan balance improves the availability of the ‘happiness hormone’ serotonin.” And who wouldn’t want happiness to be more available?

OK and now a few more benefits of beer from me

Relaxation – This is a good one for almost anyone that has sat on a patio on a spring or summer afternoon. The relaxation and relief of stress is famous for those having a beer even if the conversation always seems to turn to those office politics that get everyone riled up.

Reduces inhibitions – As we all know there are times we wish that we had gotten up and said something, either to those at work or a pretty girl at a bar and for this the alcohol in beer is a very good lubricant to the mind and mouth and will help in those situations where shyness gets the better of us.

Excuse for bad behavior – although there is no link to bad behavior and beer, many people have been known to say or do bad and ridiculous things and in the case where someone had consumed to much beer before this well there is a good excuse just waiting to be used.

So the next time someone looks down their nose at you for the stories that you tell about the night before and the beer that you drank. Come back here and point out that you were just doing the healthy thing there are benefits of beer and having a couple of beers is great.

Well I was wrong

In fact Lectins are not really a hormone at all but is instead a protein that is in some beans and legumes and grains that works as a protector of them. I can imagine that for trees to exist with squirrels around the seeds would need some kind of protection from little predators but I had no idea that this could be the case for people as well.

The fact is that Lectins are everywhere and are great for you in small amounts but in larger amounts, not so good at all. Lectins are thought to play a role in immune function, cell growth, cell death, and body fat regulation.

Where are Lectins found?

Lectins are found mostly in raw legumes and grains, and most commonly found in the part of the seed that becomes the leaves when the plant sprouts, aka the cotyledon, but also on the seed coat. They’re also found in dairy products and in something called nightshade vegetables.

The richest, most abundant sources are the ones we would be most worried about. These are kidney beans, soybeans, wheat, peanuts and potatoes.

Lectins in plants are a defence against microorganisms, pests, and insects. They may also have evolved as a way for seeds to remain intact as they passed through animals’ digestive systems, for later dispersal. Lectins are resistant to human digestion and they enter the blood unchanged.

What is The Problem With Too Much Lectins?

As I mentioned earlier, Lectin in small amounts are very good for you. The trouble is that a larger amount of Lectins will affect nutrient absorption of foods and can really irritate your gut wall. In fact some people have such a bad reaction to lectins that they will have an upset stomach and actually throw up from eating them.

There are also links between Lectins and Inflammation, and Arthritis as well as a few other diseases. So be aware!

Crohn’s disease or irritable bowel syndrome are diseases where the stomach lining and intestinal walls are irritated which makes digestion both incomplete and very difficult, I really feel for these people and the stomach problems that they live with daily. For these sufferers it seems the gut lining is even more sensitive to Lectins

The great thing about Lectins is that they are pretty easy to avoid if you are at all careful. And I am not talking about some crazy diet or weird new foods. Just proper preparation.

Cooking foods will lower Lectin levels. For example, with red kidney beans there is a Lectin called Phytohaemagglutinin, the presumed toxic agent, is found in many species of beans, but is in highest concentration in red kidney beans. The unit of toxin measure is the hemagglutinating unit (hau). Raw kidney beans contain from 20,000 to 70,000 hau, while fully cooked beans contain from 200 to 400 hau. White kidney beans also known as cannellini beans, contain about one-third the amount of toxin as the red variety; broad beans contain 5% to 10% the amount that red kidney beans contain.

There are studies that seem to show though that a slow cooker will not be enough to destroy the Lectins, so I better find a better way for my chilli recipe.

The Soybeans mentioned earlier also have their Lectin issues fixed by simply cooking them.

Grains also contain a type of Lectins, that although lower, could be a real problem since we all tend to eat a lot of grain based foods. The lectins are mostly destroyed by heating and cooking.

Potatoes, Tomatoes are also higher in Lectins as they are a Nightshade Vegetable. The Lectins in both of these are not reduced by cooking but they have not been linked to any kind of stomach upset. There is a chance for the Lectins in in Tomatoes and potatoes though to cross the gut barrier into the . blood and may be a cause of inflammation.

Peanut Lectins are also impervious to heat. The good thing is there are not as many Lectins in peanuts

So the real takeaway for us all really is to remember to cook any beans thoroughly and not to eat an abundance of tomatoes, potatoes, or peanuts although in moderation there does not seem to be much trouble with any of these three.

To make you a better person, or to make you a happier person? Hopefully, it’s both.

One of the most important things to realize when you are on a quest for self development is that happiness is not something that other people bring you like a birthday gift. Happiness comes from what you yourself do. It comes from acting in line with your own ethical values in a way that brings you closer to your personal goals.

Here Are 7 Steps To Bring You Closer To Happiness

1. Know Your Purpose

Are you wandering through life with little direction – hoping that you’ll find happiness, health and prosperity?

Identify your life purpose or mission statement and you will have your own unique compass that will lead you to your truth north every time.

This may seem tricky at first when you see yourself to be in a tight corner or facing a dead end. But identifying your purpose will help you to find the way out, even when it seems there isn’t one.

2. Know Your Values

What do you value most? Make a list of your top 5 values. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning.

As you set your goals for the year, check your goals against your values.

If a goal doesn’t align with any of your top five values, you may want to reconsider it or revise it.

3. Know Your Needs

Unmet needs can keep you from living authentically. Take care of yourself. Do you have a need to be acknowledged, to be heard, to be fed, to be loved in some way that is not being met right now?

There are so many people who live their lives without realizing their dreams and most of them end up being stressed or even depressed.

List your top five needs and be creative in thinking of ways you could have them be met. It’s never too late!

4. Know Your Passions

You know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life. Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm may hinder you, but need not prevent you from becoming the person you ought to be.

Express yourself and honor the people who have inspired you to become who you are.

5. Live From The Inside Out

Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence. Commune with nature. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. For most of us city slickers it’s hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our own home.

You may choose to meditate, to walk in a quiet place or to sit and listen to gentle music. Silence does not necessarily mean no sound at all, but requires a certain inner silence.

6. Honor Your Strengths

What are your positive traits? What special talents do you have? List five of them – if you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help. Are you imaginative, witty, good with your hands?

Find ways to express your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase your self-confidence when you recognize your skills and use them to teach or share with others.

7. Serve Others

When you live authentically, you may find that you develop a sense of being connected with all forms of life. When you are true to who you are, living your purpose and giving of your talents to the world around you, you are expressing your spirit, your essence.

At the same time, you are able to connect with the essential good in others. At this point, serving others is no longer a chore.

We cannot change others. We can only ever change ourselves to live more peacefully and happily in the circumstances of our lives. That is why self development has such huge rewards both for ourselves and those around us. I hope these steps bring you closer to happiness

Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers.

The work in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition dispels the common belief that tea dehydrates. Tea not only rehydrates as well as water does, but it can also protect against heart disease and some cancers, UK nutritionists found.

Experts believe flavonoids are the key ingredient in tea that promote health. These polyphenol antioxidants are found in many foods and plants, including tea leaves, and have been shown to help prevent cell damage. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it.

Public health nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton, and colleagues at Kings College London, looked at published studies on the health effects of tea consumption.

They found clear evidence that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can cut the chances of having a heart attack. Some studies suggested tea consumption protected against cancer, although this effect was less clear-cut. Other health benefits seen included protection against tooth plaque and potentially tooth decay, plus bone strengthening.

Dr Ruxton said:

“Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so it’s got two things going for it.”

Tea Does Not Dehydrate

She said it was an urban myth that tea is dehydrating.

“Studies on caffeine have found very high doses dehydrate and everyone assumes that caffeine-containing beverages dehydrate. But even if you had a really, really strong cup of tea or coffee, which is quite hard to make, you would still have a net gain of fluid.

“Also, a cup of tea contains fluoride, which is good for the teeth,” she added.

There was no evidence that tea consumption was harmful to health. However, research suggests that tea can impair the body’s ability to absorb iron from food, meaning people at risk of anaemia should avoid drinking tea around mealtimes.

Dr Ruxton’s team found average tea consumption was just under three cups per day.

She said the increasing popularity of soft drinks meant many people were not drinking as much tea as before.

“Tea drinking is most common in older people, the 40 plus age range. In older people, tea sometimes made up about 70% of fluid intake so it is a really important contributor,” she said.

Claire Williamson of the British Nutrition Foundation said: “Studies in the laboratory have shown potential health benefits.

“The evidence in humans is not as strong and more studies need to be done. But there are definite potential health benefits from the polyphenols in terms of reducing the risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancers.

“In terms of fluid intake, we recommend 1.5-2 litres per day and that can include tea. Tea is not dehydrating. It is a healthy drink.”

The Tea Council provided funding for the work. Dr Ruxton stressed that the work was independent.

This condition is known as Rhabdomyolysis.

If you have ever worked out hard after not doing weights in a while, or run for the first time in a long time, you are very very aware of the muscle soreness that can occur.

Sometimes though, well trained people will transition from one type of exercise to a brand new one and the possiblilty exists for them to really fry their muscles badly and get this condition called Rhabdomyolysis.

What is Rhabdomyolysis?

Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle tissue that leads to the release of muscle fiber contents into the blood. These substances are harmful to the kidney and often cause kidney damage. This means the kidneys cannot remove waste and concentrated urine. In rare cases, rhabdomyolysis can even cause death.

As you can see from the image to the right the kidneys are having trouble clearing toxins and muscle fibers and your urine would be a brownish color.

This is a very very bad thing to have happen.

If you see this make sure you go to an emergency room immediately to get your electrolytes adjusted as well as blood cleaned, possibly with dialysis.

When muscle is damaged, a protein called myoglobin is released into the bloodstream. It is then filtered out of the body by the kidneys. Myoglobin breaks down into substances that can damage kidney cells.

There are a lot of causes for this. Not just this idea of pushing muscles really hard but also, trauma or crush injuries, use of drugs such as cocaine and other stimulants, genetic muscle diseases, extremes of body temperature.

In fact this issue was first discovered not in athletes, but in victims of an earthquake back in the early years of the 20th century.

What Does Research Say About Rhabdomyolysis?

I first saw an article on the Today site when I heard about this issue on the radio a couple mornings ago, the article was called Thinking about signing up for spin class? Read this warning first. I know, this is classic fear mongering but here is how that article started.

Lauren Peterson figured taking a spin class would be a great way to get in shape. But after less than 15 minutes of intense pedaling she felt nauseous and nearly passed out.

Two days later the 33-year-old Bronx schoolteacher’s urine had turned dark and the muscles in her thighs had become swollen and excruciatingly painful.

The article is shocking enough to never want to take a spin class but realistically this is not quite as common as you might think for Spinners and other people getting into shape although Rhabdomyolysis occurs in about 26,000 people a year in the United States.

The article that they were referencing on the news on the radio that I heard a couple of days ago was this one that has been published pretty widely. Intense, repetitive motion exercise can cause rhabdomyolysis

Like many doctors, I, too, have advised patients and readers to exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Now, Dr. Maureen Brogan, associate professor of medicine at New York Medical College, reports that intense, repetitive motion exercise can cause rhabdomyolysis. And, in rare cases, it can kill.

Brogan explains that when muscle is damaged, it dumps myoglobin, an iron and oxygen-binding muscle protein, into blood circulation. Excessive amounts of myoglobin can obstruct the kidney’s filtration system and cause serious damage.

Takeaways For Athletes To Avoid Rhabdomyolysis

So is this the kind of issue that we should be worried about now as the weather gets warmer and we are out getting more exercise? No, I don’t think so, but it is always prudent to make sure you are careful. Remember that you are one year older than last year and not only are your muscles, but also connective tissues likely weaker than back last Summer.

One other issue that came up in this research was the idea of dehydration. I know that dehydration can creep up quick and if your muscles and organs are not well hydrated you are at risk for cramping and heatstroke, as well as Rhabdomyolysis.

Finally one last thing that I think needs to again be pointed out, if you are in great shape and are looking to try a new sport or activity, remember that you can likely push your body far harder that first time out then your body would be able to recover. Try to avoid excessive soreness.

I just found a great list of folk remedies for when you actually do accidentally sunburn yourself. I do not know where it comes from but I thought I would pass it on with a few comments along with these sunburn treatments.

I have tested some of these sunburn remedies but not all. Also remember that if you have any kind of a skin rash or irritation many of these will help as well.

The Best Sunburn Remedies Are Always Avoidable

First of all I want to mention that if we are very careful in the sun then a list of sunburn treatment is never needed (plus some info from webmd). However this does sometimes happen and for that the following list of sunburn remedies is great.

Aloe Vera sunburn remedy
This is probably the most popular of sunburn remedies. Take as many leaves as necessary from an aloe plant; refrigerate; peel off top layer of leaves; apply the side of the leaf with flesh exposed directly to the sunburn.

Aloe is very effective in relieving pain and inflammation Other remedies use aloe vera juice: for mild to medium sunburn, keep the affected area moist with aloe vera juice.

Repeat frequently. This will reduce the pain and the amount of peeling.

Combine aloe juice with the amount of vitamin E. Dab on the sunburn. Vitamin E is a good moisturizer and sunburn remedies. Aloe vera ointment works well, too, as it contains oil and will not evaporate.

For a severe sunburn, keep the area moist at all times with aloe vera juice. Since aloe vera is an astringent, you may want to use aloe vera ointment or some sort of oil, such as olive or baby.

Shower as a sunburn remedy
Take a warm shower to draw out the heat of your sunburn. The warm water will increase circulation to the area while hydrating it, thereby speeding the healing process. Be sure to moisturize afterward as the water will dry your skin.

Baking soda compress sunburn treatment
Dissolve some baking soda in water and make a compress using a clean cloth. Another remedy is to add 1/2 cup of baking soda to a tepid bath and soak.

Instead of drying the affected area with a towel, let it air dry.

Baking soda is cooling and will help the skin retain moisture.

Apple cider vinegar
Apply apple cider vinegar to the sunburn with a cottonball, or make a cooling compress for a large area to relieve the pain. Keep the skin moistened. This remedy will prevent blistering and peeling.

Aspirin or willow bark
Aspirin kills the pain and reduces inflammation and redness of a sunburn and is one of the best sunburn remedies. It short-circuits the whole sunburn process. It must be taken within 24 hours of getting sunburned. Aspirin is preferable to ibuprofen or acetaminophen because it is less stressful on the liver and kidneys.

Herbal Baths
Add 20 drops of each of lavender and chamomile essential oils to a tubful of cool water and soak for 10 minutes. Bergamot, Add bergamot oil to cool bathwater.

Calendula Bath
Put 20 drops of calendula tincture in four ounces of water and bathe the skin until the pain goes away. Calendula is also available in gels and salves. Calendula will help soften and heal burned skin. It is anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, and can be used long after the burn to heal the skin.

Lavender Oil
I just received an email from someone that has used lavender oil topically to relieve the problems that they had with sunburn and claims that it works everytime

Cucumber rub
Rub sunburned area with fresh cucumber slices. They are very cool and will soothe the area.

And the cucumber rub will make your skin taste good too!

Epsom salts compress sunburn remedy
Dissolve epsom salts in water and make a compress using a clean cloth.

Ice compress
Apply ice or cold water to the burned area. This will stop the burning process and cool the skin.

Lemon water
Mix the juice of three lemons into two cups of cold water and sponge on the sunburn. The lemon will cool the burn, act as a disinfectant, and will promote healing of the skin.

Milk compress
Make a compress of whole milk (or buttermilk) and apply to the burned area for 20 minutes; repeat every two to four hours. Wash the milk off so you won’t smell sour! A similar remedy suggests using a cup of skim milk and four cups of water, adding a few ice cubes, and applying as a compress as recommended above. The fat content of the milk is soothing for burns.

Oatmeal bath
Put some oatmeal in tepid bath water, soak for a few minutes, then air dry yourself. Oatmeal baths are actually very good for the treatment of many skin problems as well as one of the more powerful sunburn remedies.

Peppermint
Apply peppermint oil to the sunburned skin. You can also make a mild peppermint infusion and use it as a wash to cool the sunburn.

Yarrow
Native Americans used an infusion of ground yarrow as a wash.

Potato
Grate a potato and apply it to the burned area. The starch will cool and soothe the burn.

St. Johns Wort
Make an ointment or salve with the essential oil of St. Johns wort for burns that have not broken the skin. It is anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial.

Caution: St. John’s wort makes the skin more photosensitive, so stay out of the sun if you have used this remedy or if you are taking another form as an antidepressant. The caution is courtesy of a reader named Wendi.

Tea sunburn remedy
Make some tea, cool, and apply to the burn. While any tea may be beneficial, mint tea, such as peppermint or spearmint are especially good. The teas have tannins that help the healing process.

Urtica urens
Put 20 drops of urtica urens tincture in four ounces of water and bathe the skin. This remedy is good for itchy, prickly skin.

Witch hazel
Make a decoction of witch hazel and apply with a compress.

Yogurt
Apply plain yogurt with live cultures, let it stand for a few minutes, then rinse off under cool water.

What not to use as sunburn remedies

No matter what you do some people swear by putting butter on a burn but this is in fact a very bad idea as it can lead to an infection if you have any kind of a cut.

Also some people say that Preparation H is good for soothing a sunburn but one of my readers says that in fact this is very bad and can cause you skin to dry out and peel instead.

So if today you got a sunburn, or if you are looking for some sunburn remedies next weekend now you know what to try and how to get rid of that nasty sunburn. You will know that by then end of this post.

One of the big things related to planning your day and getting motivated to do things is getting rid of all of those distractions in your head. On a daily basis we apparently think about the same 98% of things that we thought about the day before.

We are living distracted and the worst thing about it is that we are always finding more and more things on the internet to distract us from our goals instead of of simplifying our lives.

I fall into this distraction trap as badly as anyone. I am looking for a new digital camera and must have spent 20 hours researching forums, websites, reviews on Amazon and more.

And again, earlier this month I was looking for a new pair of headphones to listen to movies with and went through the same process. I spent 10 hours deciding what headphones to buy and in the end I spent $23 on ebay for a pair of headphones. All this work is not at all worth the time that we spend.

The main help for many of our distractions is lists.

David Allen of Getting Things Done fame says that your mind will not let go of distractions and ideas and thoughts until you put them somewhere that your mind will trust.

One thing that I do in some parts of my life is to have lists. For this and other blogs I will have a list of post ideas and for around the house I do the same. Some parts of my mind are not always clear though. I do not have all the processes in place.

A process is as important as a list. If you were to move you would have 20 or 30 things that you would have to do between now and the moving day. If you have this process down then it stops your mind of thinking up distractions that may or may not be important for your move.

So in weight loss or health improvement you have a new and important tool here in this post.

First, find all of the things that you think about to do with your new lifestyle and write them down, you can expand on them now or later but the sooner you flesh out ideas of food, exercise, ideas of better fast food, taking up old or new activities the sooner that you can let your mind move on to newer and previously unknown ideas. I use a simple $5 notebook from the grocery store and I am sure this kind of simplicity would work well for you too.

Secondly, go through this list every day to add new items or delete items that were not important in the end. If you accept that you can write things down and realize that the list is not set in stone and items can be deleted later then you will not overthink if something should go on the list or not.

In times when I am overwhelmed with distractions I grab this book and read the notes that I have made in the past and not implemented and I also write down everything that is on my mind. To me this is a great way to stay organized and to not get distracted by some of those things that do not matter as much as my mind sometimes thinks that they are.

The sun also contributes significantly to the daily production of vitamin D, and as little as 10 minutes of exposure is thought to be enough to prevent deficiencies. The term “vitamin D” refers to several different forms of this vitamin.

Two forms of Vitamin D are important in humans: ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Vitamin D2 is synthesized by plants. Vitamin D3 is synthesized by humans in the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays from sunlight. Foods may be fortified with vitamin D2 or D3.

Vitamin D Needs and Deficiency

The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones.

Recently, research also suggests vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which your bones need to grow. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone diseases such as osteoporosis or rickets. Vitamin D also has a role in your nerve, muscle, and immune systems.

Vitamin D is measured as Serum 25-Hydroxy vitamin D levels. A Serum Hydroxy vitamin D level of 10 ng/mL is low, a level of 15 ng/mL is adequate and a level of 200 ng/mL is potentially toxic

Rickets and osteomalacia are classic vitamin D deficiency diseases. In children, vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, which results in skeletal deformities. In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, which results in muscular weakness in addition to weak bones.

Populations who may be at a high risk for vitamin D deficiencies include the elderly, obese individuals, exclusively breastfed infants, and those who have limited sun exposure. Also, individuals who have fat malabsorption syndromes (e.g., cystic fibrosis) or inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s disease) are at risk.

How to Get Vitamin D

You can get vitamin D in three ways: through your skin, from your diet, and from supplements. Your body forms Vitamin D naturally after exposure to sunlight. However, too much sun exposure can lead to skin aging and skin cancer. So many people try to get their vitamin D from other sources. You need to get anywhere between 200IU to 600IU of Vitamin D a day with the amount increasing as we age.

Vitamin D-rich foods include egg yolks, saltwater fish, and liver. Some other foods, like milk and cereal, often have added vitamin D.

You can also take vitamin D supplements. Check with your health care provider to see how much you should take. People who might need extra vitamin D include

Breastfed infant

People with dark skin

People with certain conditions, such as liver diseases, cystic fibrosis and Crohn’s disease

If you’ve ever marvelled at somebody’s creative prowess, guess what, you can create and innovate too.

It just takes time.

Everyone is born creative. The box of crayons in kindergarten were not limited to those who possessed potential; because the truth is, everybody has potential.

You know how long it took to learn to ride a bike or drive or to never commit the same mistake again? A while, right? It’s the same with innovation. It takes a bit of practice and a lot of time before this mind function comes easily when called. This article will teach you a few tips on how to bring innovation into your life.

How to Inspire Innovation Into Your Life

1. Don’t listen to what other people say about how to live your life. Follow the beat of your own drum. Allowing for the input of other people will only bring cacophony to the music you are trying to make.

If you have an original idea, don’t waste your time and effort trying to make people understand. They won’t. And the ‘help’ you will probably get comes in the form of negative feedback. If all the geniuses of the past had listened to their peers, we would probably still be living in the middle ages.

2. Spend time on it. I cannot stress that enough, although, please do not think I mean you should quit your day job. I do not. This involves some tricky time management but with a little discipline you’ll be able to squeeze both in.

3. Exercise. Take a walk. Run a mile or two. Send all those endorphins coursing through your veins. Exercising certainly clears and relaxes your mind and allows for anything to pop up.

4. Record your dreams. Aren’t some of them just the craziest things that your conscious mind would never have thought of? If you’ve had this kind of dream, and I’m sure you have, this just shows you the untapped innovative power you have lying within.

So jot down those notes. Those dreams may create an innovative spark in you.

5. Find your own style. You can always tell a Van Gogh from a Matisse. You’ll know Hemingway wrote something by the choice of words on the paper. So it is the same with you.

People will appreciate your innovation more because it is uniquely yours and that no one else would have thought of what you were thinking. That will let people see how valuable an asset you are.

6. Don’t hide behind nifty gadgets or tools. You don’t need the most expensive set of paints to produce a masterpiece. The same way with writing. You don’t need some expensive fountain pen and really smooth paper for a bestseller.

So what if you’ve got an expensive SLR camera if you’re a crappy photographer? Who cares if you’ve got a blinging laptop if you can’t write at all? The artist actually reduces the number of tools he has as he gets better at his craft: he knows what works and what doesn’t.

7. Nothing will work without passion. What wakes you up in the mornings? What keeps the flame burning? What is the one thing that you’ll die if you don’t do? Sometimes people with talent are overtaken by the people who want it more.

Think the hare and the tortoise. Ellen Degeneres once said that if you’re not doing something that you want to do, then you don’t really want to do it. And that’s true. Sometimes you just want something so bad you become a virtual unstoppable. And that is passion. Passion will keep you going.

8. Don’t worry about inspiration. You can’t force it; inspiration hits when you least expect it to. For those unpredictable yet inevitable moments you should prepare by carrying a notebook and pen.

On the other hand, you will probably remember your most important ideas. J K Rowling had the idea for Harry Potter while stuck on a train that was delayed for four hours. She had no pen and didn’t start writing anything down until she reached her home. Yet the ideas survived.

I hope this article has helped you bring more innovation into your life. Keep in mind that you’re doing these things for your own satisfaction and not anybody else’s. But soon enough they will notice the changes in your life, and everything should snowball from there.

Gave it 110% eh? Well that does not even make sense but the reason that people say that is that they want to stress that they had nothing left except what they did today.

The fact is it is impossible to give your workouts, whether cardio 100% of everything all of the time. You have off days and you have times when you are a bit tired or your diet is not quite there on a particular day.

To really make gains ion strength or weight losses in fat you need to go beyond your norm, beyond 90% and remember how these college athletes do things trying to get to the final 4.

I have always been a believer that if I do a set of bench press the first few reps are useless for strength increases. The only reps that matter are the ones where you are pushing past your already known strength limits and reaching to levels of strength where you have never been, the last couple of reps is where all of the muscle gets created so your bod knows what is needed next time.

Similarly when doing cardio, the first few minutes of a ride or a run are just the warmup. I never look at the workout as really being fat burning and endurance generating until I am over 30 minutes or when I am over 80% of my max heart rate.

This week look at all of your workouts. Are you pushing as hard as you can? Are you going through the motions? I know that there are down times but if you are not reaching your goals right now, why not “Go the extra mile”?.

Get a new sense of what is possible by pushing harder and faster in the next couple of weeks to levels of fitness that you have never reached before.

My New Spring Running

Right now I am starting a new running regimen that I haven’t done in at least a couple of years and I am sore, really sore for a couple of days after. Even though I whine and complain, I know that this is what it is going to take to flex those muscles physically, to push myself to a new normal level of strength and capacity that my hips, and knees, and those seldom used muscles in my core are just not used to.

The other thing that I am trying to really dial in is my diet. Getting a better handle on whole foods, eating less junk, and making sure that my body has the fuel to heal itself. For rest I am getting a bit more high quality sleep and stretching to get the lactic acid out of my muscles.

As hard as it is in pushing past your self imposed limits, in the end, right after the workout even, it is very satisfying. The results come fairly quickly and you know it hurts and your body needs to heal in between, but doing these hard pushes a few times a year gives you so much more confidence in what you are capable of. You go to bed with more satisfaction.

Even though getting up in the morning can be a bit more difficult and there is a bit of wincing when I go down the stairs right now, I am waking up with a smile on my face and I am sure you are as well.
