Weight Watchers success story - Jennifer

Sometimes nagging health problems are all that separate you from success on many different levels. Jennifer has a great story to tell. With irritable bowel syndrome Jennifer thought that a weight watchers diet plan would help her stomach pains and it did. Also she lost the weight which was not her first priority to begin with.

All Jennifer wanted was to cure her stomach trouble; losing weight was a fantastic bonus.

Losing weight wasn't even on my mind when I first joined Weight Watchers meetings and started following the POINTS Weight-Loss System. But it turned out to be the sweetest surprise.

About a year and a half ago, I went in to my doctor with bloating and intense stomach pains. He diagnosed me with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, and suggested joining Weight Watchers. His reasoning? The most effective way to fight IBS is with a healthy diet high in fiber, and that's exactly what this plan promotes.**

Fixing Bad Habits
I've always feared change, so going slowly was key. The constant support in meetings helped me make over my diet. After a lifetime of bad eating habits, I gradually increased my fiber intake. I learned what foods were high in fiber, like fruits and veggies (especially dark greens). I also discovered powdered fiber supplements that I could sprinkle on my meals.

Since I practically live at work, I generally bring Smart Ones® meals for lunch and dinner. And thanks to the Smart Ones ice cream cups and cones, I don't have to feel the slightest bit guilty about indulging in dessert.

The Workout Challenge
I'd always hated exercise, but I've found ways around my aversion. First of all, I always work out first thing in the morning; it sets me on the right track. And I have this really neat computer program for my treadmill that helps me choose the speeds and grades, like having a personal trainer! Just two miles three mornings a week keeps me fit and motivated, but isn't grueling enough to make me want to give it up.

My IBS improved within a month, but the real shocker was that I also lost 29 pounds.* I can finally share clothes with my skinny sister, and I gained the confidence and self-esteem to go back to school for a Master's in education. And to think, all I wanted to do was cure my tummy aches!

Jennifer's Tips

  • Smart Ones are a life-saver. My favorites are Honey Dijon Chicken and Smart Pockets. I heat the Pockets ahead of time and pop them in my purse for a meal on the run.

  • Eat a snack bar after lunch. It can be a real sweet-tooth satisfier for just two or three POINTS values, depending on the flavor or brand.

  • Get creative with side dishes. One of my favorites is spaghetti squash with cinnamon and Equal.

  • I have contests with my co-worker to challenge us to drink our daily water.
