Before
Changing her relationship with food helped Sandy lose 97 pounds*. Even better, she's teaching her kids how to live healthily-and discovering a second honeymoon with her husband!
My weight has been a struggle for as far back as I can recall. When I got married, I matched my husband portion for portion, and I continued to gain until I was a size 24.
Little Voices
In the spring of 2004, my daughter, then four years old, started making comments about my big butt and fat belly. Of course they were innocent remarks, but her voice was added confirmation that I needed to get control of my weight. My self-esteem was at an all-time low and my whole family was suffering. My mother-in-law was a lifetime member of Weight Watchers, and she invited me to join meetings. I have to admit that I felt starved the first week I followed the POINTS® Weight-Loss System, but I did lose weight. Soon, I learned to plan ahead so I had the right foods—the ones that keep me full—handy at home all the time. I also learned that it was ok to feel a little hunger sometimes.
A Rewarding Commitment
Everyone who knows me knows I don't waste money, so when I joined Weight Watchers meetings, I was going to get every penny's worth. The awards along the way definitely helped me to stay motivated.
The ultimate realization of my accomplishment, though, was running into a former student of mine last summer. I said hello to him and he had no idea who I was. I smiled and continued walking, but a minute later he ran up to me and said my name. Nothing could erase the smile from my face that day.
Living as "Lifetime"
The website is so helpful to me as a Lifetime Member. The Success Stories and message boards remind me that the journey I began two years ago will never be over. I remain just as alert and dedicated as a beginner to avoid pitfalls. Sometimes it's difficult when there is no "goal weight" left to aim for—that's when I hit the website for a boost.
Back to Family
Because of Weight Watchers, my children are learning to live healthily. I get exercise by chasing them around all day! And my husband and I are in the honeymoon stage of our marriage all over again.
Sandy's Tips:
- Measure food to be sure you're eating the proper portions. Over time, they tend to grow, so you should recheck yourself regularly.
- Allow room for treats. Don't deny yourself unless you're facing a "trigger" food that you can't stop eating.
- Eat breakfast to get your metabolism going. I eat yogurt mixed with bran flakes to start the day right.
- Don't forget to write down even the BLTs—bites, licks and tastes.
- Consider every pound lost a victory—don't get discouraged by the big picture. Take measurements or calculate your BMI for a different view of success.
- Save a piece of your "big" wardrobe to remind you of how far you've come (but get rid of the rest so you can't go back).
- If I feel the need to chew, but I know I'm not really hungry, I pop in a piece of sugarless gum!
