Are Eggs Good for You?

Are eggs good for you? Over the last 50 years there have been mixed messages from all levels of the food management chain over whether eggs are good for you or poison to your body. Taking Veganism out of the picture it is interesting to see what is going on within that egg in your fridge

What is in Eggs

Are Eggs Good for You?
Are Eggs Good for You?
Protein - The average egg has an interesting protein profile that can not be overlooked. For many years the best protein that bodybuilders ate to improve muscle was egg protein, this has not been replaced by whey protein but still eggs are good for you in that they have a very balanced amount of amino acids and each egg has 6 grams of protein
Carbohydrates - Eggs have no carbohydrates so they also have no fiber but still for many people on carb restricted diets this is a good choice.
Fat - Eggs are actually high in fat for their weight and size. The average egg has 5 grams of fat which is only about 40 calories from fat but this is almost as many grams as protein. This is a problem for many people although most people are not going to eat too many eggs at one time for this to be a deciding factor whether to eat eggs or not.
Cholesterol - Eggs are very high in Cholesterol and this has been the problem that the health industry has had with Eggs over the years. the average egg has 211 mg of Cholesterol so people that are concerned for good reason that eggs can be a risk to your heart and arteries with the cholesterol leading to high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries.

100 Eating Tips

How to Stop Emotional Eating

Emotional eating is something that we can all get hit by and is something that we need to understand the triggers of and how to deal with.

I tend to be a pretty emotional guy but I never seem to fall into the trap of emotional eating which can involve people eating large amounts of food to comfort themselves and get rid of the bad or tough feelings and situations that we can run into in everyday life.

The trouble is that often emotional eating can be caused by bad feelings about our weight and self image and we sabotage ourselves using food as a short term fix. How Does Emotional Eating Start? There are really five kinds of situations where we can get triggered emotionally and that may lead to emotional eating. (Thanks to medicinenet for these).

Knowing the causes can really help us learn how to stop emotional eating.

Leptin - Fat Hormone Regulation

Leptin is a hormone in our body that controls fat regulation. This post is going to be a work in progress but I wanted to point out a hormone that we all have to deal with when it comes to hunger and fat loss and fat storage (getting fat).

One of the problems that I have found, and my wife as well, when Leptin is explained is that science is not very nice to us common folk. I suspect that you want to know how to lose weight and are not really too interested in becoming a biochemist to do it.

How Leptin controls fat stores

Leptin is that starvation hormone that decides that our body has to store fat if we are in a starvation situation (like animals getting ready for winter hibernation) or to burn our calories quickly (like when animals are in a hunting or hunter situation).

Basically when we eat too much food and do not exercise enough we store fat. Leptin controls that storing of fat in our body just like it would in animals but we as people with supermarkets, fast food, and easy access to the smells and tastes that we like. We kind of mess things up as far as eating when hungry comes in and do have to do something to regulate it on our own.

Okay, have you got that straight? Hope so. So when we are on any kind of a regular diet what will happen is that we lose weight for the first few days or couple weeks and then we plateau. The other crappy side effect is that our energy drops and we have trouble working out. The plateau is caused by our our Leptin levels dropping which causes our metabolism (energy burning) to slow down and at the same time our body stores as much fat as possible.

This means that we have to do something to take us out of this fat storage problem

On any diet that uses this strategy you don't just go and gorge, you eat normal size meals until satisfied but not worrying about fat content of the foods or carbohydrate types.

The important thing about this method is to make sure that you are reminding your body that you are safe, you are not starving, and to bring your Leptin levels back so that you are again able to lose fat and not have your body store fat.

How to Choose Milk

Though we’re drinking less milk than 30 years ago — women down about 19 gallons per year, mostly in cereal — it’s still an ideal way to get your calcium: One glass packs a quarter of the daily 1,000-milligram requirement (you should get 1,200 if you’re 51 or older).

Federal dietary guidelines suggest sticking to skim and low-fat milk to keep saturated fat levels down. OK, but how do you choose from there? We got the scoop on the new cartons in the dairy case.

If you’re vegan, look for B12, too. Shoot for milks that say “unsweetened” — even plain varieties may contain extra sugar. Here, serving suggestions from Dreena Burton, author of “Let Them Eat Vegan”:

• Soy milk is a bit higher in healthy unsaturated fats than other nondairy milks, so it has a richer flavor ideal for creamy, savory sauces.

• Rice milk has a natural sweetness perfect for baked goods. (Tip: Use flavored rice milk and reduce the recipe’s sugar.)

• Coconut milk boasts a clean, fresh flavor that perks up plain old oatmeal, and it contains a special type of saturated fat that, studies suggest, raises your “good” (HDL) cholesterol, but not the “bad” (LDL) kind.

• Almond milk gives smoothies a nutty taste. One serving has half your daily requirement of vitamin E.

• Oat milk adds a light, milky creaminess (and filling, heart-healthy soluble fiber) to mashed potatoes.

Make Your Weight Loss Resolution Work

I am really excited about this week. Actually I used to always get excited about new years resolutions and the anticipation of a new me in the new year.

I used to set a complex set of resolutions every year and then would promptly let them slide after the second week of the year and quickly forget them so that I would not have to deal with the disappointment of failing to make the changes necessary.

The last couple of years I have avoided new years resolutions really so as not to disappoint myself.

So this year I have changed. This week I am going to show you how to change you life for the better and give you a better chance to keep yourself on track. This is what I will cover over 4 posts.

1. Today, we will do this little intro and I will also write about looking back over this past year.

2. Tomorrow, I will write about your goals for next year

3. Day 3 will deal with how to identify and use your strengths and weaknesses. You need to know what you have to work with.

4. On this last day we will see how to make sure that you put action steps in place so that you will be able to successfully declare victory in your resolutions as well as looking at your values and the affect they have.

Today you need to look back. Try to get a couple of pieces of paper and see what the last year dealt you both good and bad and start letting the ideas of what you want to see in 2010 swirl around. You don't want to commit to anything but we all know what we would like to see in our future and unless we start taking steps our dreams will never materialize.

This is what you need to do. On one sheet of paper draw a line down the middle and on the left side write down all the great things from last year, both things in your control and things our of your control. On the right side of the paper do the same with all the bad things and disappointments. Once you have this list all written out I hope you feel good about this last year but maybe not. This is a really in your face way to bring everything that has happened to the forefront and is a method that I use anytime that I am feeling a little out of control. You have no way to know what to do next if you do not know where you have been already.

So just do this one exercise. This is a tool that will make tomorrow a lot easier and tomorrow is the exciting day of looking at what you want to see happen next year.
